Virgin Media has charged me £98 for a call to this number that I never actually placed. They won't give me a refund and told me to get in touch with whoever owns the number. But seriously, who on earth owns it? Feels like I've been ripped off.

Got a £98 charge on my Virgin Media bill for a 25 minute call linked to this number. I never made that call from my landline on their plan, so I’m guessing it’s one of those reverse charge scams. Tried sorting it with Virgin, but they’re not budging on giving me my money back, even though it feels dodgy. Anyone know if it’s even possible to get a refund for something like this?

My 17-year-old son’s phone was charged £74 by O2 for calls to 09037089400, even though he definitely never rang that number. I phoned O2’s Network Investigation Team as the account holder (I’m his mum), but they seemed not bothered at all. The calls were supposedly made on 23rd Sept, 25th, 26th and 2nd Oct 2017. When I try to call the number back, it just says it’s unobtainable - it’s clearly a scam. I’m at a loss as to how I can stop this happening again. Any suggestions would be really helpful!

O2 has billed me at premium rates for the following numbers: 09015451068 & 09037089400, but I never dialled them. It's hard to have faith in O2 to stop these kinds of charges in future when they keep saying I made those calls. They refuse to block similar numbers to avoid this issue again. If O2 really cared, this wouldn’t be happening in the first place. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Feels like a scam!

My student daughter rang HMRC on 24.10.17 using a number she found on Google, but we ended up being charged £82.51 by Virgin. After spotting that the number was a scam, I contacted Virgin to ask if they could refund the amount as a gesture of goodwill. Sadly, they wouldn’t budge. It’s a bit frustrating since it wouldn’t really cost them much to sort it out. Really let down by Virgin in this situation.

£70.24?! that's ridiculous, who in their right mind would pay that much? the government really ought to step in and regulate these firms better. maybe they should make it clear its a premium rate call right before they connect you, a warning or something. i feel bad for those struggling to pay it, just ends up with their phone being cut off. it's always the less fortunate who get hit hardest by these charges.

I just saw this number on my phone bill with a call that lasted about 2 minutes 22 seconds, and it cost me £9.59. Totally baffled by the charge...what’s going on?

My husband rang the HMRC using the 03 number printed on a letter from the tax office. He had the letter right in front of him during the call and even wrote down the info they gave him. But when the phone bill showed up, it charged us nearly £60 for a call to an 09 number, not the 03 one he'd dialled. We contacted TalkTalk to complain, saying we never called that 09 number, but they just insisted that we did. The original call to the legitimate 03 number isn’t listed anywhere on the bill. Since our phone line is through BT, we’re not sure whether BT or TalkTalk is behind this, but it looks like someone’s profiting by switching the call details around.
