Absolutely a con! I just received an email claiming there's a new voice message waiting for me, and I need to download something to listen to it. It's a total trap! Stay vigilant, everyone!

Received a dodgy message that pretends to be from Microsoft Office 365. Included was an attachment that supposedly holds a VOIP voicemail. Be wary!

I received an email that purported to be from a Microsoft voicemail service, and this number was mentioned in it. It seems rather dodgy and likely a phishing attempt.

Today I got an email saying I’ve got a voicemail from 08 700 420477. The message said there was a voicemail file attached and that I should listen to it. Just thought I’d warn everyone else, especially after reading the comments here, that this seems like yet another trick to scam people!

If you need to get in touch with HMRC for general questions, you can ring them on 0870 042 0477 - just be aware it costs around 13p per minute plus your usual access fee. Alternatively, they have a mobile-friendly number you can call at a local rate: 0300 200 3300.

I got a call from someone saying he was Mr D Millar from HMRC, claiming I owed £7,000 in unpaid taxes. He asked for payment right there on the phone and kept pressing me about my bank balance. Then he started threatening that they’d send someone to my house next week to arrest me. Total scam.

One of the staff got a call from this number and the bloke on the line was really pushy, insisting he owed back taxes and had to pay immediately or the police would show up and arrest him. Luckily, he went straight to payroll, and we told him it was a total scam. HMRC never ring up demanding money or threaten with police like that. It was pretty upsetting for our guy, especially since they also said they’d visit his parents’ house to collect if he didn’t cough up!

I've just taken a look at my Vodafone bill from February, and it shows an unusual charge that’s a bit more than my usual £12 or so-£11 over, to be precise. It appears the extra cost is linked to a single call made to the number in question. I've been in touch with HMRC recently, and I'm certain I dialled their official line. Feels a bit dodgy, if you ask me! I've got a bit of spare time, so I think I'll kick things off by dropping a line to Vodafone. Cheers, Roger Howell

This number is actually ours for payment enquiries. Please don’t mark it as an incorrect number. Some people do need to contact this line, and it’s wrong to say it isn’t the right one.

They took 55p a minute from me, but this isn’t the real HMRC. The genuine HMRC contact is 0300 200 3300.
