If you get a call or email saying you owe tax, it’s almost defo not from HMRC. They only send letters through the post about unpaid taxes, so don’t believe anyone trying to contact you by phone or email - they’re just scammers trying to trick you.

When I called back, someone picked up and said they could provide a batch ID to prove it was really HMRC. I tried looking up the number on the hmrc.gov.uk site but couldn’t find anything matching, so I ended the call. This kind of thing really needs reporting to HMRC’s phishing team right away to help prevent scams.
