Similar to many of you, we received a phone call (number hidden) from someone claiming to be with HMRC, seeking to speak to a director. Unfortunately, no one was available at that moment. They asked for a call back on the number 0845 3020136, but I couldn't find any information on SayNoTo0870 about it. If this caller truly represents HMRC, it raises the question: why didn’t they specify a name when asking for someone? Seems rather dodgy to me.

I can definitely tell you that this number belongs to the VAT department at HMRC. They're not an entity you want to take lightly! I had a chat with them today and I must say, they were exceptionally pleasant and eager to assist. They do throw a barrage of security questions your way, which is understandable given the nature of their work. It's really in your best interest not to brush them off; a conversation can help clear up any misunderstandings. In my case, since I don't owe any VAT, they simply updated their files accordingly and extended their best wishes for the day. Just a word of advice - steer clear of any trouble with the VAT office!
