This afternoon at around 4:08pm, I got a random text saying:

IMPORTANT! We've been trying to get hold of you, it's urgent to speak with you today. Please ring 08445718137 and mention your reference. Thanks.

But I hadn’t noticed any missed calls before receiving this message, and I was in an area with full phone signal all day, so it’s clear they hadn’t actually tried to reach me at all.

Also, the message didn't say which company it was from.

If anyone can share who these messages come from, I’d be very grateful.

Got exactly the same text as everyone else here in the last hour. No calls came through, just that message. Honestly, I'd just chuck it in the bin and not bother. Seems like a clever trick to lure folks into ringing a pricey 0844 number, since a lot of people are wise to those premium rate cons now. If loads ring back, the scammer still pockets some dosh. To give you an idea: BT charges up to 5.1p a minute plus a connection fee of up to 15p. Virgin clocks up to 12.41p a minute plus around 15.94p connection, or up to 5.1p per call. Mobile phones cost even more! The SMS came from 07456317621, but you can fake those easily these days.

Got a random message out of the blue that seemed like a sneaky way to make me ring a number, probably some sort of premium rate line.

Got a random text telling me to ring this number urgently, with some ref number included. No clue who it was from or what it was about, so I just ignored and deleted it.

Got a strange text asking me to ring back a number straight away. I called it without much thought and the voice said it was a company named "MMS." They then stuck me on hold with some irritating tune playing. I ended the call after about half a minute. Fingers crossed that’s the last of it. Cheers

Yep, I got a call from +44 7447832440 too. No missed call or anything. This has got to be a scam!

Received the same annoying spam at 17:19. Absolute rubbish! The message came from +44 7447832440, which is registered to Three. Sent a rather sharp email to their support but I’m not holding my breath for any action. Currently trying to track down the owner of the number, though I’m not hopeful. I’m guessing PhonePayPlus will wash their hands of it since it’s not a premium-rate text, Ofcom will pass the buck back to PhonePayPlus, the police will punt it over to Ofcom, and the Information Commissioner’s Office will just ignore it all. Typical runaround for these telecom scammers. Makes you wonder if the regulators are on the scammers’ payroll.
