I’ve noticed this number popping up on my BT account repeatedly, but I’ve never actually called it!

I've been on a bit of a wild goose chase for the past six months, trying to figure out the mystery behind this peculiar number that suddenly popped up on my mum's phone bill. Today, I finally got to the bottom of it: it turns out this number is linked to the lifeline/panic button service that gets called when the button is pressed or tested. Tunstall Response is the name behind the lifeline service. Interestingly, this panic button has been in place for over five years, yet these charges have only emerged this year. While it's not a premium number, it appears to be one of those shared cost lines. I’ll leave it up to you to ponder the ethics of this new charge, especially considering we already fork out a monthly fee for the lifeline service. I couldn't find any mention of additional call costs in the paperwork from Tunstall Response. Perhaps that's because the equipment was provided through the local council and not directly from Tunstall Response.

I've noticed that a particular number has shown up on my elderly aunt's BT account for the past couple of months. In total, there have been 11 calls racking up to £25. The durations vary, some lasting anywhere from 2 to 14 minutes, and they come at all sorts of hours - even three calls in the dead of night when she's fast asleep and not near her phone! It’s worth mentioning that she’s completely lucid and not suffering from dementia. BT keeps insisting she must have “approved” these premium rate calls, which is frankly absurd. They've promised to block any further premium charges, but I'm not feeling overly optimistic about the situation if these scammers are pulling off some kind of phantom billing. We'll just have to wait and see how it pans out, I suppose.

I've only just realised that this number has been siphoning money from us since May 2019! It wasn't until we cut off our phone lines more than a year ago, all thanks to those pesky sales calls, that I stumbled upon this. Quite the revelation, I must say!

I've been billed for calls that I never even placed. Virgin is downright unhelpful when it comes to blocking this number. What a hassle!

My dear old mum, who suffers from dementia, keeps getting bothered by this number. I really need to find a way to put a stop to it!

My elderly mother, who is 85 and suffers from dementia, is constantly troubled by calls from this number. Despite being on the Telephone Preference Service, her provider, the Post Office, says they can't assist as premium rate calls are already barred. I’m at my wit's end trying to figure out how to put an end to these calls. It’s truly unjust that she’s being charged so much for calls she can’t even answer or dial herself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In January, I received a bill for £84 from a call I don't recognise at all. Quite perplexing, really! Any clue who this might be? Anon

I noticed a number on my phone bill that looks like I've made calls to it. After getting in touch with my service provider, I've discovered it's a shared cost number. I'm at a bit of a loss here-what can I do about it? It seems quite unfair to foot the bill for calls I didn’t actually make or even agree to take. Any advice?
