Don't bother ringing them back, it's clearly a scam. Got a voicemail from some automated voice claiming to be Dennis Grey’s office (could’ve been Cray or Cree, I wasn't sure) about some urgent HMRC problem. They said if I didn’t call back soon, I’d have to ‘face legal consequences’. HMRC wouldn’t ever reach out like that, so definitely a con.

I've been receiving numerous voice messages and calls from individuals purporting to be from HMRC. I decided to call back on three separate occasions. On the first ring, I was greeted by someone who struggled with English, but they assured me they would check into it and asked me to hold - however, they left me hanging on the line with no update whatsoever. The second attempt saw me keeping the phone on, but eventually, the call got disconnected on its own. By the third try, I inquired about the situation, only for the call to abruptly end again. All in all, I've ended up spending a hefty five quid on these calls!

Got a call like that once and when I answered, the person said his name was Peter Williams. I asked if Denis Gray was around, but was told “she’s not at her desk.” I corrected them, saying I meant a gentleman called Denis, not Denise. Then he said Denis was away as well. I joked, “So you’ve got both Denis and Denise Gray there, are they family?” He just said yes and then suddenly ended the call. Weird experience.

got a call from someone who sounded asian, but it was just a robotic voicemail, no real person talking. the connection was awful, and i could tell immediately it was dodgy. i tried asking a few things but got no reply, so i just ended the call!

I didn’t get an actual call, just a voicemail left. I found this number and decided to ring it back. The message claimed to be from HMRC officers about a tax fraud case, asking me or my solicitor (which I don’t have) to return the call. Problem is, HMRC phone numbers don’t begin with 0844. They said there was some legal action and a package signed for at my address, which is completely untrue. I checked with a mate who works at HMRC and he told me they wouldn’t phone like that; they usually send letters first and that number definitely isn’t theirs.

They said they were from hmre but the number didn’t even start with 0844 like you’d expect. The call was about some fraud lawsuit with tax, but the person on the line sounded foreign and started threatening me, saying I was going to be arrested. When I asked for any court reference or the name of the official who supposedly signed some papers they claimed they sent, they couldn’t give me a single detail. I can guarantee neither me nor my partner (the only other grown-up in the house) have received anything like that. Total scam, if you ask me.
