From what I’ve read in the comments, it looks like they’re just picking numbers at random. Best thing is to not pick up. If you just let the calls ring out, they usually give up after a while. But if you answer, they can tell your number’s active and might pass it on to other dodgy marketers, so you’ll get even more calls. Also, watch out for those suspicious texts from short codes trying to sell stuff like viagra. They work by getting you to text ‘stop’ back, but if you do that, you’re actually confirming your number is being used and they’ll likely sell it on too. Only reply with ‘stop’ if you know for sure who’s sending the message.

I decided to press '5' just for a bit of banter, thinking if they’re going to bother me, I might as well make it a bit of a faff for them too. Ended up speaking to a chap who sounded like he was from up north. Told him straight up I was just messing about pressing '5' to take up some of their time and make the call pricier for them. He insisted I’d be charged for doing that, but I tried to tell him that’s not how phone networks operate. After that, he just hung up on me. Fingers crossed they’ve blocked my number by now. Got a call from them around half past four this afternoon about some kind of PPI thing.

I rang them back, and an automated message said they were a company based in Budapest, asking me to press buttons for different options. They mentioned a website to stop the calls (I didn’t catch it clearly but I think it was something like tps.co.uk, which I believe is a legitimate place to block nuisance calls). Then they said to press 9 if I wanted to stop getting calls from them. That instantly set off alarm bells for me. Around 20 years ago, there were similar calls that tricked loads of people across the UK into pressing 9 on their landlines. The outcome? Their phones were used as satellite switches to reroute calls abroad, and the phone owners ended up with huge bills. So no thanks, I’m not falling for that again.
