We received a call on our mobile, notifying us that our landline calls were being diverted to this number. My wife attempted to contact it from her mobile but hung up right away when she heard there was a waiting queue. Shortly after, when she tried using her phone again, she found that her balance had been completely wiped out. We logged onto our Virgin account to investigate and discovered that this number had been dialled again-without our knowledge-for 26 seconds, costing us £10.70. We suspect this is a scam, as we couldn’t trace any identity linked to this number.

I’m employed at a call centre that handles incoming calls, and not long ago, a client mentioned that when she dialled my number, she was greeted by a pre-recorded message directing her to ring 0843 116 7788 instead. She told me she hung on in their “queue” for roughly twenty seconds before losing patience. It wasn’t until her fourth try that she actually managed to connect with me.

So, we decided to give our mate’s number a bell and were met with a rather dodgy recorded message saying, “If you wish to inquire about this number, please call 0843 1167788.” Given our friend is quite the celebrity, we were a bit taken aback and thought it might be a prank rather than a scam-perhaps he’d just been inundated with random callers or something. Naturally, we rang the number, only to find ourselves stuck in some kind of queue. That raised our eyebrows, so we did a bit of digging online and stumbled upon this website.

Our lad received the very same message right after she tried to ring our home phone. She also dialled the number but hung up promptly, convinced it's a scam. We've informed BT about the situation; they're familiar with these issues cropping up via broadband, but it seems they haven't encountered this with landlines being compromised. They’re going to look into it and get back to us with their findings.
