Got a call from this number on 25th July 2024. A woman with an Asian accent asked for me by name and claimed to be from Barclays Bank. At first I wasn’t sure so I looked up the number here. The guy, Yash, said he’d confirm me through my banking app but I said no and just gave him my name and address. That was enough to get past security to talk. After that, he sorted out some fees on an old business account and shut it down for me without needing any other personal details. Yeah, it’s outsourced but I guess Barclays use them to tidy up stuff like shutting down accounts that aren’t in use.

This number is from Barclays Bank, I’ve actually talked to them and they’re genuine. Barclays often uses call centres in India. For those moaning about the calls, I used to work in a bank and even when we ring, we still have to verify who you are because anyone else answering your phone isn’t allowed to hear your details, it’s part of data protection laws. If you’re unsure, just ask next time you’re in the branch or ring them up directly. Don’t automatically assume it’s a scam just cos they call you!

Some bloke from India, called Himanshu, wanted me to verify my details before saying what the call was about. He refused to tell me anything till I passed the security check. Plus, he didn’t have any 2FA or anything like that. I just gave my name and wouldn’t confirm my address after that. Said he was from the business team or something. Honestly, it’s a disgrace that telcos let Indian firms use UK numbers like this. If the government actually slapped a fine on every company misusing this, maybe it’d cut down the spam a bit.
