I gave them a ring, and honestly it felt like a bunch of dodgy scammers. Thinking about calling back just to have a bit of fun messing around with them.

I clicked on a link in my browser and got this fake warning pop up, saying my computer was infected and I should ring a number. Of course, I just ignored it and did my own virus scan, which turned up nothing wrong. Pretty clear it was just a scam trying to freak me out.

Got a voicemail from someone claiming to be Windows Security Essentials, telling me to ring them back about a virus on my PC. Thought it sounded dodgy, so I just ignored it. Then I ran a quick antivirus scan myself, and thankfully, nothing came up. Pretty sure it was just a scam trying to trick me.

Got a so-called virus warning that claimed it was from Windows Security Essentials. Still not sure how to close the popup and get rid of those annoying messages. Anyone else seen this?

Hello everyone, I've been dealing with a rather troubling incident involving my computer. It all began when I started receiving relentless pop-up messages claiming that my device was infected with a virus and urging me to ring 08000869827 for assistance. These notifications were relentless and would appear every single time I booted up my machine. What made it even trickier was the fact that the pop-ups had an official Microsoft appearance, making it all too easy to fall for the trap and actually dial that number-whatever you do, steer clear of it! So, against my better judgement, I did end up calling the number. A person identifying themselves as Ruby Wilson answered, presenting a work ID of MS 5412. They managed to sound convincingly professional and even requested remote access to my computer. In a moment of folly, I granted them access, assuming they were a legitimate outfit. They rummaged through my files and reiterated the pop-up’s claim that my computer was indeed infected. They even suggested that this notification was a protective measure instituted by Microsoft, assuring me they were accredited technicians who specialised in such issues. Looking back, the entire situation was a setup, as that so-called “virus” was merely a ploy to scare unsuspecting users into calling 08000869827. They feigned concern, claiming my information was at risk while nudging me towards spending £220 for fixes, and then a further £300+ for “additional protection”-the total spiralling to an outrageous sum of over £500. When I hesitated and mentioned needing time to think, Ruby’s tone changed abruptly. During their access, they had the audacity to create a Windows start-up password, locking me out of my own PC. I tried to reconnect with them using both 08000869827 and another number, 02080684881, to explain what had transpired. This time, the representative on the line demanded £95 to remove the password they had maliciously set. At that point, I lost my patience and made it clear that I would involve the authorities if they didn’t provide me with the password immediately. Sure enough, within three minutes, one of the scam employees rang me back. I informed them that I had documented their actions, proving they had set this password to extort money out of me. I reiterated my intent to contact the police, and they finally relented, providing me with a nine-digit password to regain access to my own machine. Post that chaotic encounter, I reached out to Microsoft at 0144034480024400. They swiftly eliminated any traces of the “virus” and secured my computer from further unauthorised access by these scammers. As for the number 08000869827-beware! It's linked to a complete telesales racket intent on swindling money from individuals who might not know better. I've reported this to Microsoft, and they have their fraud team investigating the matter. I hope this serves as a cautionary tale. It took me a good twenty minutes to draft this, but it’s worth sharing. Cheers, Jay

My computer popped up a warning telling me there was a possible trojan horse threat and told me to call this number. I didn’t do it and I’m not about to. Looks like the number is from China anyway.
