Dodgy or something worse - got a voicemail from 0044 800 009 3816 asking me to ring back but didn’t say who they were or why they were calling. Then I got a text from 0800 3160989 telling me to call them back, still no clue who they were or what they wanted. It feels like abuse of the phone system, which most of us rely on to share private info and have honest chats. But if the person on the other end won’t even tell you who they are from the start, best to be suspicious - they’re probably up to no good, and you might end up out of pocket or have your identity stolen if you pick up.

A few days ago, I got a voicemail from a woman claiming to check on an appointment about fixing a leak at my water meter. The thing is, I don’t even have a meter installed. Then today, I picked up a call from a man who said he was calling on behalf of Thames Water. He started insisting that I had a water meter leaking like 180 litres a minute or something. He told me they’d send a letter, and I told him fine, maybe that letter will magically show the meter too. After that, I lost my patience and just hung up.

I told them the meter’s outside and they could check it anytime, but then they tried to verify my details "for security." I told them to send a letter to my address and I’d confirm then. They just ended the call. I phoned Thames Water using a separate number and they said they had no record of any maintenance booking. Definitely a scam!

They said they were from “Pims Water” or something like that, trying to get me to have a water meter fitted. The voice on the phone had such a thick accent I found it really difficult to make out what they were saying, and it seemed like their English wasn’t great either. I kept saying I wasn’t interested, but they just kept going on about installing the water meter. I’m pretty sure it was a scam because I already told Thames Water a few months ago I didn’t want one - apparently you pay more with a meter anyway.

It’s mad how simple it is now to fake phone numbers. Got a call that showed up as Thames Water but no voicemail or anything which just feels a bit off. Normally they’d leave a message telling you to log into your account to check stuff. Feels like scammers are bombarding this site trying to make it look like a real call. Honestly, don’t trust it.
