Someone rang me on my EE phone claiming to be from EE. I wasn't sure so I told him to ring me back in an hour. Once I looked up the number here, he did call again and seemed quite helpful. But I wasn’t comfortable giving my details over the phone, so he advised me to visit the shop instead. This time I reckon it was legit and I’ll head into the store. Thing is, EE has been using that number ages ago, but now scammers seem to have got hold of it and are pretending to be from EE.

This number has rung me about 8 times this year, all missed calls. After reading all the comments here, I decided to pick up when it rang again today just to check if it was some kind of scam. When I did, a guy claimed he was from EE (which I actually am a customer of). I gave very little away, but he somehow mentioned details that made me think it was genuinely EE. I told him I already have EE services, so what’s the point of switching? He just kept saying it’s free. These lads from Newcastle were trying to pull a scam pretending to be from EE to BT. He wanted me to send an email from an EE address, so I just ended the call. He phoned back twice; first time I ignored it, second time I picked up and left the phone on my desk while I kept working. Got a recorded message telling me my broadband and landline would be cut off from today, saying to press 1 to keep it or 2 to cancel. The first time I got a call like this was on the very day I switched from EE to another provider, though I can't recall the number. My landline did stop working after that and the new provider sorted it out, but I'm not sure if that was just a coincidence. If my line drops again, I’ll be suspicious for sure.

I could barely make out what he was saying but I caught something about a ‘mobile provider’. He talked so fast I first thought he might be speaking another language. When I asked who it was, he didn’t slow down or repeat anything, just hung up quite rudely.

Some bloke called claiming to be from EE, seemed a bit shady at first but he said it was just a courtesy call checking if my service was alright since lockdown's back. This guy said he was from BT, not EE, but somehow knew all my EE customer info since EE rents their lines from BT. He never mentioned he was actually a BT worker. Said I could save money on my broadband and kept calling me by my first name over and over. Really pushy with the sales talk. Got an email today and found out he’d signed me up for a business account which I never agreed to or wanted. Spent almost an hour on hold with BT. The first person I spoke to was useless and just passed me on to another team where a kind woman sorted it out and cancelled everything.

I just wanna defend this number a bit. Like many others, I was super suspicious about what they were offering - but I was still open to hearing everything out. Turns out it really was a genuine call, and the person was an EE worker. Basically, they were offering a phone upgrade or better contract terms for a year. Now I’m paying a lot less than before and have chosen to hold off on a new phone for 12 months when this contract ends! Sometimes, it’s worth giving these calls that might seem like scams a little chance.
