Got two calls yesterday but both times the message just cut off. I looked up the number and went through all the comments here. I’m not planning to answer back at all, but I can’t lie, it does make you uneasy and a bit worried. It’s quite comforting though to see other people dealing with the same thing and hear how they’re handling it.

Got a call from someone claiming to be HMRC saying they were taking legal action against me. They wanted me to give my first name before going any further. I didn’t want to share it so I asked for their name and they just ended the call. Definitely a dodgy scam.

Got a voicemail from a supposedly official HMRC number - don’t be fooled, it’s definitely NOT from HM Revenue & Customs! Honestly, just hang up if you get a call from that number, it’s a total scam! Don’t answer or talk to them at all!

Beware, this is a SCAM. When HMRC contacts you, they usually send several letters initially, like four or five, to give you a heads-up. They might ring afterwards, but that's mainly to discuss how to fix any problems over the phone. This process can drag on for months, sometimes even up to a year, and only if it’s still not sorted will they consider taking legal action. A mate of mine had to deal with HMRC not long ago, and it was just like this. So yeah, this call you got? Totally a scam.

Just like the rest of them, I got a missed call and checked the number with 1471, thinking it was a mobile. I called back and a friendly voice picked up asking how they could help. I quickly ended the call since I didn’t recognise the number. Then later I found out they’d actually left a message about HMRC filing a lawsuit and wanted to talk to my case officer. It’s a relief to see I’m not the only one getting calls like this, it’s pretty worrying stuff.

Like others have mentioned, this is definitely a scam and ain't connected to HMRC at all. Most important thing - don't pick up or call back because this number comes from Peru. I messed up and rang them back just to tell them to get lost, and ended up getting charged £1.97. Seriously, just ignore it and be careful!
