Got a voicemail that totally freaked me out, and my 76-year-old sister who’s got a delicate heart got a call saying she was being dragged to court. HMRC and Action Fraud really have to step in before anyone else gets tricked into handing over cash. These scams must be cracked down on, and the laws need to be stricter so they can actually catch and punish these crooks asap.

So it’s 15/09/2017, around 10:46 in the morning. I just got a call from this number claiming there’s some legal action against me. For a brief moment I felt proper shook, but then I got my head straight and hung up. I’m 66 years old and fairly clued up, but I won’t lie, it did give me a quick jolt.

Got a call saying it was HMRC threatening me with legal action if I didn’t press 1. When I did, it connected me to someone with a really distant Indian accent. No offence meant, but I highly doubt HMRC outsources their phone calls like that. The guy kept asking for my name but kept getting it wrong after I said it a few times, then just cut off. It definitely made my heart race a bit, even though I knew something was dodgy. I reckon they must collect loads of personal info from these sorts of calls.

Same here! I actually contacted the cops and they told me pretending to be HMRC and making threatening calls like that is illegal. The action fraud team are on the lookout for these scammers and are trying to catch them. I got a call supposedly from HMRC about a legal case against me. They asked for my name, birthdate, and insurance number. I gave them my birthdate but told them I didn’t have my insurance number on me. They said they'd wait while I found it. I told them I wasn’t comfortable sharing any more details, and then they just ended the call.

if it’s HMRC trying to ring you, just remember they always send a letter before calling. this is almost certainly a scam, and it can be really distressing especially for elderly folks. don’t follow any directions they give you on the phone, just hang up.

I reckon this was an Asian guy, sounded familiar - like someone who once tried to get my bank deets. Reported em to the fraud hotline ages ago. Might've used a different number this time, but I could hear loads of other Asian voices (Indian subcontinent, men and women) in the background.
