I got a call from what sounded like HMRC, same kind of Indian or Asian accent, and ended up losing a grand. They told me not to tell anyone and to borrow cash off mates and family, even had me making up stories about why I needed the money. They said the police would be arriving to arrest me, that my cards would be frozen. They promised a refund but said I had to send the money first, claiming banks had closed and the refund would come through the next day. They wanted £3296, so I didn’t lose it all, but £1000 is still gone. Be careful, it’s a total scam.

I got a call from this number saying i had to pay like 3000 quid in tax to HMRC. They even said i'd got 2 letters sent to me and there was a warrant out for my arrest. I phoned HMRC and they said it's all fake. So i reported the mobile number to Action Fraud, and they said they’ll pass it to the cops to look into it.

Totally a scam! I called them back four times, telling them every time I was recording the conversation. None would give their names, just claimed to be from HMRC. Each time it was a different person, all sounding like they were from India or nearby regions. When I asked for their full details and my reference number - without sharing any of my info - they just hung up. Seriously, why aren’t the police or phone providers sorting this out? So today, Thursday 24th September 2020, I decided to ring back this number. The person on the other end introduced himself as David Miller and gave some Employee ID - HM1049, said I had a case with ref SC157869. Apparently I owe £4,586 to HMRC in unpaid taxes and needed to pay up straight away, or else it’d go to court. He even told me the smallest amount they’d accept right now on the call was £1000 to show I’m serious. Then he said someone (a woman) would turn up at my house within a couple of hours to sort out paperwork. He kept telling me not to hang up otherwise I’d lose the chance to settle out of court - implying if I did, it’d mean I want to fight HMRC legally. In the end I just hung up, looked into it and found out it was definitely a scam. They kept ringing back about 8 times more with different numbers like 07312851106, but I’m going to block them all now. Quite a stressful day!
