If you ring your bank to verify if a call is genuine (like in the comment below), the people on the phone will be able to tell if the bank was actually trying to reach you and should put you through to the right team or sort it out. The call centre folks might not know every single number the bank uses though. Even if they say it’s a phishing attempt, it doesn’t always mean the number itself is dodgy. Spoofing real company numbers is a big issue for both firms and their clients these days.

Some bloke claiming to be from Barclays called me about suspicious activity on my card, said his name was Gary Clayton, ext 306. I told him I’d call Barclays back and ask to be put through to him. While I was trying to ring Barclays, he phoned me 3 times, saying I needed to talk to him or someone was trying to steal money and if it went through I’d be responsible. When I finally got through to Barclays, they said they don’t use extension numbers like that and there’s no Gary Clayton in fraud. Total scam.

Got a call from this number a couple days ago, so I flagged it. Same bloke, said his name was Lewis with a really deep voice, but no caller ID showed up. Definitely a scam, I phoned Barclays and they said it was dodgy. Never share your Pinsentry with anyone, the bank won't ask for it. They'll always send a one-time code by text instead for confirmation. Your Pinsentry is like your personal security code, so as long as you keep that and any security questions to yourself, you should be alright.

Back in December 2021, we got scammed and they’re still pestering us from this same number. Even now they ring pretending to be Barclays, claiming they’ve got our bank info just to annoy us (our account was hacked and 11 fake accounts were opened using our name, with stuff delivered elsewhere). I’m due for urgent heart surgery and this stress isn’t helping me one bit. The callers usually sound well-spoken and Asian. One of the companies even gave us the address where the dodgy orders were sent. Would the police actually care about this? It feels like pure harassment.

People pretending to be from Barclays are setting up fake bank accounts and sending out letters with really rubbish letterheads to get you to call that number. They do a soft credit check on you just days before you get the letter in the post addressed to you.

Just like another person said here, I got a text from this number, and not long after, a scam call from 08009247365 came through. The text said something like: "Barclays Fraud Alert: Suspicious activity noticed on your account. Your card has been blocked for now and fraud team will be in touch soon." Very dodgy!

Scam Alert! I received a call from a chap claiming to be from Barclays. He had my first name and claimed there was an attempted transaction on my card at an Argos in Aberdeen. Quite suspicious! Some bloke called claiming to be from LLOYDS PLC BANK - there were two of them on the line during the one call. They had a bit of info about me and wanted me to verify some personal details for security checks. I didn’t give them anything, 'cause I was shady about the whole thing from the start. When they saw I wasn’t gonna play along, they began swearing like mad and said terrible things about my missus. I just ended the call there and told LLOYDS Bank straight away.

I've just come across an unexpected charge on my phone bill - it indicates I spent a staggering 4 hours and 41 minutes chatting away on the phone to some number back in June. Definitely not Barclays. It's actually a scam with two steps. I was fortunate enough to call Barclays’ genuine fraud department after I got a call back from that number. Don’t pick up the call, just block it and ring the fraud team directly. That’s the best tip I can share.

Got three texts supposedly from DHL from different numbers saying my parcel was gonna be sent back coz I hadn’t paid a £2.70 shipping charge. They said I had to pay it that day. I couldn’t remember buying anything but still paid using my Barclays debit card. The money hasn’t left my account yet. I received a call from a man with a rather unclear voice, who claimed that attempts had been made to withdraw money from my account on two occasions. I had a nagging feeling that I’d fallen victim to a scam recently, but I managed to resolve the issue with my bank and received a new card. However, my sort code and account number remained unchanged. When he suggested that I should transfer my funds, including my savings, to another account, I began to feel quite uneasy. I should have exercised more caution. The sort code he provided was a Santander one, beginning with 09, rather than the 20 that Barclays use. I promptly contacted my bank, and they assured me that they hadn’t tried to reach me, confirming it was all a fraudulent scheme.

Scam alert. This person called saying someone was trying to open an Argos account using my phone number. He sounded quite convincing and knew his stuff, but I felt uneasy and ended the call. Later, I looked up the number and it was actually Barclays Bank. When he called again about another shop account being set up, I trusted him and got tricked out of a few thousand pounds. Always remember, banks will never ask you to transfer money to another account on the phone. Stay safe!
