Shortly after, I received an automated call from a UK number starting with +44 345, purporting to be Halifax, which provided me with a code and a selection of numbers to ring if I wished to contact their fraud team to lift the block on my account. It struck me as rather daft that anyone could effortlessly remember such an array of random digits, stirring my suspicions further. However, I decided to ring a legitimate Halifax number and was told they did indeed send such messages when they attempt and fail to dispatch an SMS alert. Numerous phone number verification sites even corroborated that it was supposedly Halifax. But lo and behold, this was all a ruse! A follow-up call to Halifax revealed it was a complete scam, and there was nothing recorded on my account for the date I tried to make the payment. It turns out that the company I was dealing with had been compromised, and my transaction was intercepted before reaching their bank. Furthermore, I noted that some sites, which claimed to verify the authenticity of the call, have themselves been victims of denial of service attacks and subsequently vanished offline. It’s alarming just how sophisticated these scammers have become; it almost feels like a pandemic of its own. The reality is, you simply can’t place your trust in phone number verification sites anymore; they’re rife with fabrications. Take heed!

This does look like a legit Lloyds Banking Group number. If it's something urgent, they will ring you direct. Honestly, the best advice is always to ask them to have you ring back on the number printed on your bank card. Just keep in mind scammers have cloned phone numbers from all sorts of banks and building societies. So even if the number on your screen matches your bank’s, don't just assume it’s them. Always get what they want, hang up, make sure the line is free, then phone back yourself as soon as you can. Stay careful out there - it’s tricky these days!
