Like many others, I received a call featuring a robotic voice instructing me to hit 1 in order to connect with a HMRC representative regarding some alleged fraudulent activity. It’s blatantly a scam, if you ask me!

Got this weird automated call saying if I don’t hit 1 I’ll get arrested. Think they’ve started April Fools early this year! Immediately blocked the number, what a joke.

I received a single missed call, so I tried calling back, but it wouldn't connect. Given what I've seen from other folks commenting about this number, perhaps it’s for the best! 😊

These guys are total morons, trying to freak you out into coughing up some random amount of money over nonsense. At first, I genuinely thought I’d messed up somehow, but the way the caller kept going on, saying the same stuff over and over, made me see straight through his lies. Then he had the cheek to say he was sending the police to my house! I just told him to go ahead and we’ll see if he’s actually serious or just bluffing.

Beware of pressing 1 on that call, it's definitely a scam.

They honestly had the nerve to ask me for tips 😂😂😂 can you believe it?

Today I put in a claim for Universal Credit. It’s meant to be secure since it involves HMRC, a government site, and also the Post Office verifying things. But it’s shocking that scammers can still get their hands on this info. Because of what I’ve read here, I blocked the number and ignored the call straight away.

I just received a call from this number telling me I was tied up in some 'tax fraud' and had to press 1 to sort it out, or I'd get arrested. I tried ringing back on a private line but there was no ring or dial tone at all. Definitely a SCAM!!!

Like a few others have said, it was about some sort of tax fraud nonsense.

Got a call saying it was HMRC, but I just ended it and blocked the caller. Last month I also got one of those dodgy HMRC emails, so I'm not falling for it again.

I don't get why the phone companies don’t step in, surely they have the tools to monitor all these calls going on. It’s everywhere these days! My advice is just don’t pick up or reply to numbers you don’t recognise or trust. Legit businesses will usually send a letter or some proper mail if it’s something urgent, so don’t get caught out by the fakes.

I genuinely reckon this could be a scam and poses some serious risks. Steer clear of hitting 1.

Got a call from someone saying they were with HMRC, saying I owed money for council tax or some tax thing. Honestly, do they think no one would bother to double check? If I genuinely owed council tax, my council would have gotten in touch, not some random person pretending to be HMRC. What a load of muppets!

Received a rather alarming call that claimed to be from HMRC, stating that a fraud warrant had been issued in my name. The caller requested that I press 1 to speak with someone about it. Naturally, I didn't comply! I've reported the incident to Action Fraud for good measure.

this number rang me early, about 7:45 in the morning. i didnt pick up and when i tried ringing back it said the number wasnt in service or something like that. if it was really from the tax people, wouldnt they leave a message or a proper number to call? seems dodgy to me.

First they rang me like 5 times in just a couple minutes, first from the UK then from somewhere in the US, Charlottesville I think. Didn’t pick up at all, now I’ve just gone and blocked the number.

Got a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC saying I owed money, but it was a total con as I’ve already got a set arrangement with them for my taxes. Honestly, HMRC really needs to sort this out because poor folks who aren’t as clued up could get scammed and end up paying these imposters.

This morning at around 10:20, I got a call from 0345 300 3981. An automated message pretending to be from HMRC told me I was under investigation for tax fraud. It said I had to press 1 to sort it out, otherwise they'd send the police with an arrest warrant within 24 hours. I didn't press anything and just ended the call. Then I looked up the number on "Who called me" and after spending a good half hour reporting it to the cyber crime police, I decided to block the number.

Somebody called saying they were from HMRC, told me I owe £1947 and if I don't pay up, I’ll be arrested. They gave me just 45 minutes to sort it out. The bloke said his name was Michael Smith-98560LR and gave a case number H92241761. Really felt like a scam to me.

Had a phone call earlier today saying there was a warrant for me and to press one or I’d get arrested. They claimed to be from HMRC, but I know someone at HMRC and they said they’d never phone about something like that or ask to press a button. It’s clearly a scam. Don’t press one if you get a call like that - I reckon if an older person got this, they’d be really scared.

This number 03453003981 rang me claiming they were from the tax office. They told me if I didn't press one, the police would come to my house and I'd be arrested. It sounded really scary. Can anyone else help me figure out if this is a scam?
8 years
I had pretty much the same thing happen to me. If they really wanted to come to my house, they’d have my address already, no need for me to give it to them. And if it was actually the tax people, they’d send me a letter first, asking me to come in for an official interview. They wouldn’t just call up like that.
