Recently, I had an unexpected call from a chap claiming to be from O2, trying to entice me with a supposedly brilliant 40% reduction on my mobile plan. Now, I do indeed have an O2 contract, and I must say, a discount like that would have been absolutely brilliant if it were legitimate. However, it quickly became clear that this wasn’t the real deal. In fact, it was nothing more than a bunch of con artists trying their luck!

Got a call from 0330 390 3429, they said they’re from O2 and that I’ve been selected to cut down my bill. Sounded a bit dodgy to me.

this morning i got a call saying they were from o2 and could cut my phone bill by 40% as i’m supposedly a current customer. problem is, i haven’t been with o2 for nearly two decades, so it seemed fishy right away. when i asked who was actually calling, they wouldn’t give a straight answer and just kept saying “hang on, i’ll try to put you through.” feels like some dodgy scam to me.

This call feels like it's coming from some dodgy call centre outside the UK. Definitely a scam.

Got called three times but all within just two days.

I received a call that purportedly came from my mobile phone carrier. When I mentioned I didn’t recognise the number, the caller claimed to be from their promotions department, stating that the company was substantial with numerous sections. They then proceeded to tantalise me with a supposed 40% discount on my current mobile contract, assuring me they wouldn’t ask for any personal information. Feeling a bit lackadaisical and in need of a diversion, I inquired how such a deal would work. The caller explained that to verify my account, I would receive two texts, and they sought to confirm the code from the second one. Little did they know, I had a prior experience of needing to reset my password, along with receiving similar texts from the very same provider. It dawned on me that someone might be fishing for my password reset code, seeking unauthorised access to my account - not a chance, my friend! When pressed for this code, I obstinately replied that I couldn’t share it, as the message had clearly advised against revealing the code to anyone, including so-called staff from my provider. The caller, maintaining a civil tone, grew increasingly exasperated but not rude, lamenting that without the verification code, they couldn’t extend the enticing discount. They explained that the text’s wording was designed to protect me from potential scammers. I informed them of my strict adherence to rules, hence it was impossible for me to divulge any code from a message that cautioned against doing just that. I cheekily suggested they might want to reconsider their approach and the phrasing of their messages if they hoped for a smoother interaction. This led to a rather circular and drawn-out conversation! I’m marking this experience as a cautionary tale; it’s a rather clever ruse that might ensnare many unsuspecting individuals. Despite their efforts, I remained steadfast, and while the person was quite persistent and polite, they could not sway me. They concluded by stating I’d receive an official letter from my provider with all the details of the offer in the coming days, yet I stood firm! Ultimately, it turned out to be a rather amusing interlude in my day. I suspect I must be quite the headache for a scammer trying to pull one over!
