Got a call from someone saying they were with HMRC. I asked how I could be sure they were legit, and they told me to look up their number on Google and ring back. They also said something like "We don’t have to prove who we are." I said I wouldn’t give any details over the phone and asked them to send something in writing. Somebody called claiming to be from HMRC and asked me to call them back on the given number. I work as an HMRC Agent myself, and luckily I was out with a client at the time. If I had been at my office dealing with a client when they rang, it could have really caused serious trouble for my business.

This was a total scam call. What’s really dodgy is that the caller ID showed it was from HMRC. I rang HMRC straight away to check and they said that this kind of thing is happening a lot right now. Honestly, the phone companies ought to be dealing with this. It’s not right that anyone can pretend their call’s coming from a different number.
