I hit 1 and ended up chatting with this bloke named John Smith, said he’s with HMRC but from their New Delhi office. The call dragged on for like 30 minutes, with all the usual threats about getting nicked or taken to court. They shuffled me between a few different folks, and then it came out they wanted pics of me holding my ID sent over WhatsApp. I did send a photo alright, but I reckon it wasn’t exactly what they were after. If you’ve got time to kill, it’s worth winding them up a bit.

Just hang up if that number rings you and don’t bother dialling back or hitting 1. It’s a scam where they try to freak you out with claims about owing taxes. If you’re unsure, best thing is to ring up HMRC using the number you find on their official site!

Totally fake, my work would never do that and HMRC always send letters, not calls like this. These are definitely scammers so I wouldn’t pick up if I were you.
