I reckon those outgoing calls might be dodgy scammers trying to get your personal info for some sketchy scam, which is pretty risky. Seems like they could be linked to numbers 02837 45006 and 02837 837006. Watch out!

So, there's this automated dialler that calls loads of numbers, but if too many people pick up, it just hangs up right away. When I tried ringing back, after two rings, an American-accented robotic voice came on saying something like ‘the number you dialled isn’t in service right now, please double-check and call again’, then it beeped twice. It's not the usual BT message I get, which goes ‘the number you have called hasn’t been recognised, please check and try again’ with three rising tones before it. Quite odd really.

Out of the three calls, two times I noticed this number rings and then picks up right before any message plays. That's different from the typical BT message for genuine unused numbers, which comes on straight away with no ring beforehand. Seems to me they’re using some kind of automated setup that plays a recorded message just to check if the caller’s number is active, maybe so they can try again later or use it for marketing.
