I received a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft, stating that they had received alerts about my computer being compromised. They mentioned something called a CLSID which they suggested was a sort of unique code for my system. They persuaded me to install some remote access software and then proceeded to ask for personal information through various forms that seemed far too invasive. I didn’t complete those forms in full, as it raised a red flag for me. Then, they asked for an authorisation code that came to my phone during our conversation, insisting it was necessary for a supposed £5 registration fee. I smartly withheld that information. However, later I received alarming news from my bank; they had seen two attempts to withdraw £1,400-one through PayPal-thankfully they intercepted it as I only had €12 in my account! Consequently, my bank card was cancelled without hesitation. I promptly uninstalled the software they had me install and conducted a thorough health check on my computer, which seems to be fine now. I attempted to call that number again, but now only get voicemail, which suggests they might have blocked my number. The first time I tried to ring back, the fellow sounded quite flustered and ended the call abruptly. My advice is to steer clear of anyone attempting to fish for your personal information, especially if their accent raises any alarms.

I received a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, insisting they had detected issues with my computer’s security. They mentioned something about my CLSID, which is apparently a sort of unique identifier. They managed to persuade me to install a remote access programme on my device. Then, they began asking me to fill out several forms that requested a concerning amount of personal information. I wasn’t comfortable completing those forms in full. Next, they asked for an authorisation code that popped up on my mobile, claiming it was necessary for a $5 registration fee. I declined to provide that information, and afterwards, I discovered that my bank had received two attempts to withdraw £1400, one through PayPal. Thankfully, my bank blocked the transactions since there were only £12 in my account and promptly alerted me. They’ve since cancelled my bank card. I immediately uninstalled the software they had me download and ran a thorough security check. Everything appears to be fine now, but when I attempted to return the call, I was only met with voicemail. It seems they might have blocked my number, as my first call was answered, and the individual on the line seemed quite taken aback before abruptly ending the conversation. My advice is clear: never trust anyone asking for your personal details, especially if they have a foreign accent.
