Someone called me claiming to be from Sheffield council, but I’m in East Riding so I knew straight away it was dodgy. If you get a weird blooping sound when you pick up, it’s a giveaway - that’s the scanner working. They’re using Skype and a VPN to fake where they’re calling from. No genuine call centre would be making calls through Skype like that.

Got a call from someone called "Shaun" claiming to be from the council about fixing up my council property. Thing is, I actually own my home and work for the council myself. I told him straight up I knew it was a scam since the council doesn’t own any properties around here. After that, he kinda went really quiet.
