SCAM ALERT!!

Got a missed call from this number today. They left a voicemail claiming to be from HMRC, saying they’d found I owe £5,476 because of some tax issue from 2013-14. They also said this had been escalated since I supposedly ignored earlier calls from 0300 200 3887 (which is actually the genuine HMRC number, but they apparently spoof it to trick you into thinking it’s legit - nearly got me!). They asked if I had a lawyer, warning that if not, they'd report me to the authorities. They claimed my bank cards were blacklisted and told me to pay up immediately to avoid trouble. The voicemail said they’d arrange a meeting with an “HMRC officer” named Gabriela Stanica, which sounds made up. They never asked for any of my bank info though. Seriously, don’t be fooled like I nearly was!

Got a call and said “hello” a few times but no one answered, sounded like one of those automated call centre things. The call ended suddenly. So I rang the number back and this guy with an Indian accent picked up. I struggled to understand him at first. Told him I’d missed a call from that number. He asked for my name, I asked who he was. He replied “I’m from HMRC tax investigations.” Asked why they were ringing me, and then he just hung up. Feels like a total scam to me.
