They use an automated system that randomly rings numbers, but when you pick up, there’s no one there and it’s completely silent. This lets them know the number is active, and after that you get hit with loads of calls. The number they use is 0800 0699303. I kept ringing them until someone finally answered, and I told them to take my number off their list or I’d keep calling back - see how they like that. So far, it seems to be working. I just gave this number a go myself, after getting those annoying calls nearly every day for a few weeks. The woman who answered was really polite and promised to take my number off the list straight away... fingers crossed this means the silent calls will finally stop!

I keep getting calls from this 0800 0699303 number, which turns out to be a company called Debt Master based in Glasgow. It’s some automated setup that just dials numbers randomly. Whenever you pick up, there’s no one on the line, just silence, which I guess is how they figure the number is active. After that, they pester you nonstop. I finally got through after ringing them back loads of times, told them to take my number off their list or I would keep calling them until they got the message. So far, they haven’t called again, fingers crossed it stays that way.

Today I received a call on this number from a company called Debt Masters Direct based in Glasgow, who claimed they could help with my debts - which I don’t actually have. They insisted they were ‘working with the government’, but when I pressed them, they changed it to ‘working within government legislation’. When I asked where they got my info from, they said it was from a database. If you ring 1471, there’s a recorded message telling you to email [email protected] with your number to opt out.

Interestingly, I had a similar call from a different firm just a few days ago, and in both calls they mispronounced my name the same way, so I reckon they’re both using the same dodgy database.

I’ll be reporting them to the TPS for sure.
