Got a call from Ellie at GSM (Godwin Smith Maloney) saying I was overpaying on Council Tax and could get £6,000 back if I paid an upfront fee of £150, which they claimed I'd get refunded. Sounded pretty convincing and believable. These con artists really come up with everything these days.

I was quite pleased when someone called saying my council tax had been overpaid and I was due a refund of £3,120. The lady, Shenice, then mentioned I had to pay a fee of £150 to get the papers released. Something felt off straight away! She gave me a number to call back 08081646333 when I said I couldn’t pay just then. Total scam, definitely dodgy!

Got a call today from GSM National Tax Consultancy based in Hove. A woman named Chloe said I’d apparently overpaid council tax by £5000. Wish it were true! She offered to get it back for a £150 fee. When she tried to pass me over to someone asking for my bank info, I told her it was a load of rubbish and hung up. It doesn’t cost anything to double-check your own council tax bill. She was really smooth and persuasive though. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Got a call from a Mark at GSM, actually two Marks, one of them called Mark Watson or at least that’s the name he gave. Like others have mentioned here, claimed I’d paid too much council tax for years and was due a refund between 2000 and 3000 quid. Seemed dodgy right from the start, but I kept going with it for a bit. Never gave any payment over the phone, they also wanted £150 upfront. Still, quite believable. I reckon older folks or those less tech-savvy might easily be tricked. Best to steer well clear of these lot.

I got a call from this number claiming it was about a council tax refund because we supposedly overpaid back in 1993. The lady said she’d send someone to do a survey to check if we qualified and asked for £150 to sort it out. She promised the paperwork would arrive in a few days, but it all sounds dodgy to me. The number she gave was 08081646333 and she said her name was Cleo. I even spoke to another person who said they were her manager. Not sure if this is legit or a scam, and I have no clue if we can actually get any money back.

Got a call today from GSM, but this time from a different number (08081646333). A woman called Shenice told me I was due a council tax refund of nearly £2000. It all sounded pretty believable and she even gave me council details. I foolishly gave her the info she asked for. When I checked with the council and my bank, I saw £150 had been taken out just 20 minutes after the call! I’ve cancelled my card and told the bank to block any payments to this company. Hopefully I won’t make the same mistake twice!

A young bloke (forgot his name) rang me up saying I might be able to claim up to £5000 because my Council Tax Band might be wrong, sounded just like the other calls I’ve had about this. He said his company was Goodwin Smith Maloney and gave the number 02038616393. I told him I’d double-check with the Council and call back. He was pretty persuasive, can see how some folks could fall for it.

Just like a few others mentioned, I got a call from someone (can’t recall her name) saying my tax band was wrong. When I asked where she was calling from, she said Godwin, Smith, Maloney and then ended the call. Not long before that, a nearly identical call came asking about my loft insulation - what type and when it was last done. And again, when I tried to ask something back, they hung up. Dodgy bunch!

Got a call yesterday 4.9.18 saying I was due more than £6,000 back for overpaid Council Tax. I told the woman I was in Band A and couldn’t have overpaid. She said there were two levels in Band A and we were apparently in the higher one. I told her that was nonsense and there’s only one level per Band. She just ended the call after that.

Got a call from a woman named Cleo about some council tax rebate. When I joked it sounded like one of those Nigerian prince scams trying to get money, she just laughed it off. She said the £150 fee was legit because GSM couldn't access my refund otherwise, due to some rules. It did seem believable, but you never know with these things. Honestly, I hope she ends up with something awful someday.

My mum got a call on 04/09/18 from a woman who said her name was Clio. She claimed there was an overpayment on council tax and my mum could get back £4000. The catch was she had to send £150 first for them to get the money back. Luckily, mum double checked with her sons and avoided the scam. The number they rang from was 02038616393.

Had a call from someone named ROXY claiming to be from the valuation office agency, pretty much the same story everyone else's shared here. She gave me a number to call back, kept asking loads of personal info. She said we’d been overcharged on our council tax right back to the days of Margaret Thatcher, and that we were owed exactly £4041.18. Luckily, I rang my bank and spoke to fraud dept, who quickly blocked my card before anything went wrong. Just a heads up, they’re extremely slick at what they do.

A really convincing lady called, saying we’re overpaying on our council tax and claimed to be from an accounting firm linked to GSM. She said they could help lower our council tax, but I told her I’d check with the council first. Right after that, she just said goodbye and ended the call.

Caution is warranted regarding this company; they are truly unscrupulous, to put it mildly. I didn’t initiate the call, but the lady who rang me inquired about my residence and whether I had home insurance sorted. Then she handed over the line to a chap named Edward Stephen, and in a moment of weakness, I foolishly consented to share my banking details with him. I’ve just reported this number to Action Fraud. I just asked her to give me my money back and then she started calling me names like I was some idiot. Next thing, she hung up on me.
