Sounds like these callers just want to double-check info they've got for some kind of scam. It was an Asian guy. He asked if I’d got a local mag, but couldn’t really say why or what it was about. Then they just ended the call without any proper explanation.

A woman with a foreign accent called and asked if I’d got the local newspaper (she named it right). I said yes, then she asked if my address was xxxx - which was spot on. After that she just said something like ‘thanks’ and ended the call. I found the number by dialling 1471. Not sure how she or her company got hold of my landline and address though.

Some muppet rang my telephone preference service number from 02031 371936, going on about some dodgy home insulation scheme. He mumbled in a really hard-to-understand accent, then weirdly started asking about my age, money, and if I have any disabilities. He didn’t get round to asking if I ‘ wear to the left or right ’ though! I gave him a right telling off about TPS and he got proper nasty. Then he started slagging off my family. I just told him, yeah, it’s an accident of birth, but as for you, you’re a ‘self-made man’ of sorts. Honestly, be very wary of this one!

Got two calls, first one just dropped on me, the second one asked if I wanted some kind of paper, then tried to say the wrong address to get my real one, probably to check or sell my details. Didn’t share anything and just ended the call.

Got a call just to check if we were still getting a free local paper regularly, all they wanted was a simple yes or no answer. They didn’t ask for anything else, and they obviously don’t have any info about you apart from knowing the number is linked to a home in a certain part of the UK. Definitely not a scam, but it can be a bit annoying if it interrupts you when you’re busy.

Got a recorded message saying it was BT saying my internet’s been hacked and asking me to ring a different number.

Probably some call centre in India hired by a local free newspaper to confirm that the deliveries actually reached the customers and weren’t just left lying around.

Got a couple of calls from an Indian guy in less than an hour. First time, he asked if I’d got some flyers through the post - I just cut him off and hung up. Second time, same number, I didn’t bother picking up at all!

They just rang me from a London number but I didn’t pick up, coz I wasn’t sure who it was and it showed as an international call. Weird...

I was asked if I had received the local newspaper, and then I was asked to confirm my address. Afterward, I received a call from 01254 659773, with someone trying to gather details of my debit card. I immediately ended the call. Is there any connection between these incidents? My concern is that both calls managed to bypass Sky Talk Shield.

0203 137 1936 rang me three times, about half a minute apart. First call, some bloke asking about delivering a local free paper, I told him to stop wasting my time and hung up. Second call, he claimed he wasn’t selling anything, but I just shouted at him to leave me alone and cut off. Third time, I answered and just shouted “yeah,” then they hung up immediately. Haven’t heard from them since.

Some woman from India rang me up, asking if I got any Ocado flyers. I just said I wouldn’t be telling her if I had. Then she just ended the call. By the way, in the UK, 0203 numbers are sold as having 'no fixed area' and aren’t really London numbers like this site says. Funny enough, Gujarat phone numbers start with 0203 too.

Got a call from a woman with an Asian accent asking if I'd got the local paper. I said yes and then she just hung up. Tried calling back with 1471 and it said “number not recognised”, so I’m guessing it’s some kind of scam. Probably safest to just ignore these calls.

Got a call from 02031371936, this guy asked if we still got a local paper we stopped a while ago. I told him I actually run that paper lol. He was some Indian guy called Steve who then tried to give some dodgy address just to get mine. Nah mate, try again. Keep fishing, you muppet!

Got a call from someone in India using a fake number, probably trying to trick me into giving out personal info for a scam later on. Don't fall for it, just hang up and block the number straight away.

02031371936 just rang me, some woman with an Asian accent asked if I get the local Redditch paper delivered. Felt kinda off. Tried calling back but the number wouldn’t connect.

Just like everyone else here. They rang to check if the local paper had been dropped off. Bit strange though, coming from a London number when it’s about a local newspaper from the Midlands.

They chose not to respond; I let the call go to my answering machine, and they disconnected without uttering a single word.

They rang me about four times in a row when I didn’t answer. When I did pick up, there was no one speaking. A woman kept saying “hello” over and over, but then just stayed quiet on the line. I’m guessing she was actually trying to reach someone else.

Got a call from this number just now, asking if I get the Oxford Journal and wanted to check my address. I said yes by mistake! No big deal though, saying yes doesn’t mean anything official here. Still, felt like they were hinting at something else. If America goes through some nuclear cleanup, I know exactly where to send 'em!

Just like what others have said, I got a call from an Asian guy asking if we get the local Clarion newspaper. I think I said yes, then he asked for my address and I said that too, then he suddenly hung up on me. It was pretty creepy. Honestly, don’t answer these calls, just end them straight away. I’m a bit worried now. Should’ve just ignored it from the start.

The person on the phone enquired if I had recently received a local newspaper along with some leaflets. My response was affirmative. They then mentioned the name of my road, and once again, my reply was yes. Subsequently, they politely expressed their gratitude before ending the call.

Just got a call from this Indian woman asking if I’d picked up the Rhyl Journal this week. I said yes, and then she goes on like she already knows where I live. Feels a bit dodgy to me, like some kind of scam. What if they’ve recorded me saying yes? I’m proper worried now, anyone got advice on what to do?

A few days back, my phone rang but went dead just as I was about to answer. It happened again around the same time recently. After reading all these other comments, I’m pretty sure it’s just the same old thing. Feels like there’s definitely something fishy going on.

Got a call from this number but no message was left. I tried ringing back on my old phone I keep for dodgy calls but it says the number isn't valid. Seems like a scam to me. I've blocked it now.

Got a call from someone asking if I get the local paper delivered, then they wanted me to confirm my address. I went along with it, but then it hit me - my number’s unlisted, so there’s no way they should have my name and address. Ugh, why didn’t I catch it sooner?? Now I’m left wondering what kind of trouble I might have just invited in...

Beware of this cunning scheme! Scammers will give you a ring and inquire if you have received your complimentary local newspaper. If you answer affirmatively, they will then request you to verify your name and address, which can later be sold to other fraudsters for nefarious purposes. So, it's essential to be extra cautious when encountering such phone calls.

Just got a call about Durham County Council, same as what someone else mentioned about an hour ago. Seems like this number is linked to them or something. Wonder if it’s legit or just one of those automated calls. Anyone else getting calls from this?
