I’m ex directory and keep getting calls from this number. When I finally picked up, there was a recorded voice claiming to be from HM Revenue saying I had to ring them straight away or I’d get into trouble. I jotted down the number and after a while they called again, but I just let my answerphone pick it up, the same automated message played. Then I used my mobile and called back with my number hidden, a man with an accent answered, but when I started asking questions, he just hung up on me.

I'd definitely advise against calling them back. Had something quite like this happen to me last year, nearly got caught in a scam. Things got suspicious when they started asking for my PIN and suggested meeting near a cashpoint. Didn’t give them any info, obviously. Reported it straight to the coppers and sorted out cancelling all my bank cards. I've passed the details on to the police again now.
