Spoke to a very cheerful British lady who was asking about my insurance. She began by mentioning my full name and address, then asked as a security thing which insurance I last had. I told her to give me the policy number first, figuring if it was a con she’d hang up. But she rattled off a pretty believable mix of numbers and letters. I just said I’d check it out later and asked what the call was about exactly. She explained that due to covid, they were lowering policy costs and issuing refunds because a lot of people were cancelling.

Got a call from someone who said she was Rachael at Domestic and General, telling me my washing machine warranty was up. Definitely dodgy on all fronts - the washer actually has a lengthy warranty that started less than two years back, Rachael’s accent was clearly Indian which made me wary, and Domestic & General aren’t the ones insuring my appliance. Got a call from a woman with a strong English accent saying they were checking on our Aviva life insurance because of some COVID related review. She already had my surname and first name, which seemed a bit odd. I told her we don’t have any insurance with Aviva, and she just hung up after that.

Got a call about some warranty for my washing machine that was apparently about to expire. I told them there’s no way it’s under warranty since I grabbed it off eBay for just £26. I use call blocking so that anyone who isn't in my approved contacts has to say who they are or drop a voicemail. If I don’t recognise a number, I usually look it up here first. Going through these reviews, it’s clear this is just another scam call!

Got a call from those washing machine scammers bright and early at 8 in the morning today. I know it’s a bit cheeky, but the only thing that seems to stop them in their tracks is me blowing my referee's whistle crazily loud into the receiver. Normally, I’m not rude to anyone, but honestly, if they’re trying to con me, they get what’s coming. Another fun tactic to try is saying, “Hello, this is the Southampton Police Station. How can I assist you?” Works a treat sometimes!
