This afternoon, I got a rather alarming phone call stating that HMRC was initiating legal action against me. The caller's tone turned quite confrontational when I declined to share any personal information, including my name. Things escalated further when I pointed out that if this was indeed HMRC, they would communicate through proper channels rather than making a phone call. At that point, I decided to hang up. I urge others to do the same. It’s best not to divulge or verify any of your information, especially regarding tax matters-this really seems like a fishing expedition to me!

I got a recorded call telling me HMRC was about to take legal action and to press 1 to talk to someone. I felt off about it but pressed 1 anyway. The line was really poor, then a man with an Asian accent came on, asking what I wanted. I told him he called me, and he asked what info I'd received, so I said he was going to prosecute me. Then he asked if I was Mr ??? and where I lived. I said yes to the name but no, I moved 15 years ago. He just hung up right after. I knew it was dodgy but looked it up here to be sure. Best just to hang up quick if you get this call.

If there’s a problem, you’d get a letter in the post asking you to contact them using official numbers. If they start asking for stuff like your National Insurance or dob, it’s a scam. Don’t answer, just end the call and report it. I used to work in tax investigation, so trust me, stay sharp!
