Everyday I get calls from what seems like a new firm each time, always the same annoying routine. It’s just not right to bother someone who’s seriously ill like this. I honestly don’t have the strength to deal with it all the time. Honestly, these callers must be mental or something.

Another one of those dodgy Oriental gentleman clubs from the West ringing up about folks long gone and buried, trying to grab cash that’s long since turned to dust. Tonight at around 5:47pm my mum’s landline rang and it was the same automated message she got just over a month ago. It claimed HMRC was taking legal action against her, which really upset her both times. She hung up straight away, but she was really anxious when she told me about it. Luckily, this website helped me reassure her that it was just a scam.

Got a call saying it was from HMRC about some lawsuit they said was pending. They told me to press one to chat with a case officer. When I asked the guy, who said his name was Roger Williams but sounded like he wasn’t a native English speaker, which department he was from, he just ended the call! Got a message on my answerphone saying HMRC was initiating some "lawsuit" against me, then asked me to press 1 to talk to a case officer. Total scam! HMRC never deals with stuff like that over the phone - they always send letters first, and they wouldn’t jump straight to legal action without trying to sort things out first. Definitely dodgy.

Got a message from 01618505786 - an automated one claiming to be from HRMC saying they were taking legal action against me and to press 0 to talk to my case officer. I ignored it, but then rang back the number just to check. It was a pre-recorded message with an Indian woman's voice asking me to leave a message, so I hung up immediately. This kind of scam would really scare older people or anyone vulnerable. BT really needs to crack down on these scammers using UK landline numbers. I've reported this number to the BT ABUSE website.

I rang them back just to see what was going on, and the person on the other end actually said "HMRC" right away (big shock, sounded like an Indian bloke). He wanted to know if he was speaking to "X", I told him yes (though he was asking for a woman, which isn't me!). When he asked for my NI number, I asked why he needed it, and then at that point he just hung up on me. I don't get how these scams even work or where they get paid from doing this kinda stuff?

Yesterday I got a similar message and out of curiosity I pressed 1. The bloke who answered said his name was Brad Thompson and then asked me for my national insurance number. I didn't give it to him, of course, and he just hung up straight away. After that, I contacted HMRC using their official number to report it. They told me to submit the details through their website. Fingers crossed they or the police track this down and take action, especially since the phone number is one that can be identified.

A mate of mine who's 72 got a call from this number today, and they pretended to be from HMRC. They said they’d been trying to get hold of her and it was urgent she didn’t hang up. She got nervous and ended up giving them her National Insurance number. They then told her to wait for an "Officer Jones" to come on the line. Worried, she rang me on her mobile while keeping the call on her landline. When they came back on the line, they heard me and immediately asked who I was. She told them I was a friend, and they said they had the wrong file and apologised for bothering her. I told her to ask for their name and number, but they just hung up.
