Had the exact same thing happen, a bloke with a white British name but a really thick Indian or South Asian accent claiming someone in California had hacked me. When I asked how he could prove he was from BT, he rattled off this absurdly long number he said was his ID. He tried to find out what gadget I was using to get online. When I told him I’d ring BT myself to check, he just hung up on me - pretty obvious scam if you ask me!

Some bloke said he was from Virgin Media, telling me my IP address was being used by someone in America and that they’d switch off my internet for three weeks. Funny thing is, he never got to what he actually needed from me, but still had the nerve to say I was wasting his time (all I did was talk to him for 10 minutes instead of him annoying someone else).

Got called a couple times from people claiming to be Virgin then BT. Talked to the first one a little but it was obvious a con, he kept asking for my IP address and said my internet would be off for three weeks due to some hack, so I just ended the call. Then literally 5 seconds later, another bloke with an Indian accent rang saying the same thing but from BT. As soon as I said I'm not a BT customer and called it out as a scam, he just hung up. Watch out and don’t share any details!!!

A bloke named James Wilson phoned me claiming he was from BT and said my internet had been hacked and needed to be stopped for 2 weeks. He actually knew my name and email address. I kept asking how I could be sure it was legit, but he just told me not to worry. He asked me to look up "my IP address location" on Google and then wanted me to read the info aloud. I then told him I’d ring BT myself to check if it was real. I called BT and they said it was a scam - no record of the call or any hacking on my account.

Guy with an Indian accent rang me on my mobile earlier, saying he was from BT and that there was some illegal stuff happening on my broadband from someone in California. He told me they were going to cut my line unless I gave him my IP address. Seemed really fishy. If he was actually from BT, he’d use the landline, plus my broadband isn’t even with BT. Giving him my IP would just let him hack into my computer. So if you get a call from 01618185874, just don’t pick up. If you do, just hang up straight away.

Absolutely dodgy! Got a call from someone purporting to be from VT or perhaps BT; their story shifted mid-call, which raised my suspicions. They insisted they had to suspend my internet for a three-week period as I'd supposedly been compromised by hackers. Clearly from an Indian call centre. When I remarked that I was losing interest, the chap rudely told me to "bugger off." Oddly enough, he had my name and email. Quite unsettling, really!

Proper worried that folks might fall for this. Some bloke calling himself "Jason" with a heavy Indian accent said he was from BT's tech team and claimed our broadband had to be cut off for a couple of weeks because of a cyber attack. I asked if we'd be charged and he insisted it was free since they're a government department. When I said we have an IT business at home and don’t actually use BT for internet (though obviously their lines are involved) and told him I wasn’t convinced, he got all defensive. I just hung up.

I tried explaining to the guy, who seemed to be speaking from abroad, that there’s no need to disconnect if the line’s been hacked and tried helping him understand that. Got a call from someone saying he's Mark Smith from BT, using a Manchester number. This ‘Mark’ had a really thick Asian accent. He claimed some bloke named John Kroll in California was trying to hack my internet IP. I asked for a contact number to check if it was legit. Got a call from someone pretending to be with BT Openzone, sounded like it was from a call centre in India. They told me there was a problem with my internet, even after I told them I don’t even have broadband through a landline. They kept going on about some issue in California, I reckon they were trying to grab my IP address so a hacker could get into my devices, including my mobiles.

Just got a call from the same bloke again. He claimed some man named John Kroll from New York had hacked into my internet. Said I’d be offline for a couple of days. He rang my mobile instead of my usual BT landline. Asked me to look it up on Google ‘so I could see it myself’. Didn’t bother since I wasn’t even at home. Pretty sure it’s a scam.

Got a call from someone saying they were with the BT fraud team. They sounded Indian and told me my phone line was going to get cut off for a couple of weeks because some hackers in California were apparently using it without my okay. When I said I wanted to ring BT myself to confirm if this was legit, they gave me some info: Name was Adam Watts, employee ID BPR1901, and a number to call - 020386862508. The line was really fuzzy, but they came across as proper convincing.

Got a call from BT saying someone in California was messing about with my IP address. The guy had a heavy Indian accent and was really keen to keep me talking. Bit odd that this same John from California seems to be hacking loads of BT IPs!

Got a suspicious call pretending to be from 'BT' - kept calling me non-stop. I finally told them to shove it, and thankfully they stopped ringing. Was proper sketchy, tried to get me to type things into Google. Watch out, they sounded really convincing!

I got a call from someone pretending to be from BT tech support. They were saying that a bloke called John Crawl had somehow stolen my IP address. When I said I don’t even have BT internet, they told me BT services the entire country. I told him I used to work for Sky broadband, so I’m pretty clued up on which companies cover what. I also said there’s no way they could get my info as I’m not a BT customer. After that, he started mumbling and couldn’t come up with anything else, only that John is from California. Then they just hung up! I’ve blocked the number since.

This strange number (0161 8185 874) rang me on my Viber but I chose not to answer. It really puzzles me how someone can ring on Viber showing a landline number though. Feels like a scam, so definitely best to ignore and block it.

Had them call me, they knew my name but got the address all wrong. As soon as I questioned them, they just ended the call. Seriously, don’t share any details with these lot!

Got a call saying they were gonna shut off my internet for like 2 weeks ’cause someone from California was trying to hack my IP or something. The line was super fuzzzy and hard to hear but I just pretended to go with it for a while before they suddenly dropped the call!

Got a call from some energy firm, they used the wrong name but somehow had my phone number. The voice was definitely from a call centre, probably somewhere in India. Quite odd, to be honest.
