I got a call that my phone’s smart caller ID flagged as likely fraud, and I guess the phone companies get updates from people sharing these nuisance numbers. I didn't pick up, let it ring through to voicemail. Just like others mentioned, some Officer Sally Owens, speaking with an American accent from Inland Revenue, left a message. She said if I don’t ring back on 0161 521 3262, which she called her dept’s direct line, or if they don’t get in touch with my lawyer, I might face legal trouble. Said it was really urgent too. I've gone ahead and blocked that number now.

Upon returning the call, I was greeted by a chap with an Asian accent declaring, "HMRC." It's quite easy to fall for this ruse. However, if you ring back using 141 to keep your number private, you'll find it redirects you to their voicemail. In my experience, they spoke of a business where I once served as Secretary, yet when I gave a fictitious name, they claimed they couldn’t share any details. I insisted they communicate in writing if there was anything pertinent regarding the business; I firmly do not entertain discussions about any business matters over the phone, especially from unknown callers. The irony? That business ceased operations over five years ago! I’ve now blocked that number for good. Be wary and do not divulge any personal information to the caller, as this is clearly a tax scam.
