When I mentioned that it had been somewhat sluggish recently, the chap probed into how long this situation had persisted. He then alarmingly suggested it appeared as though someone might be attempting to breach our computers. He proceeded to query about the type of computer we utilise and indicated he wanted to walk me through some steps to resolve the alleged issue. However, as it was just 8.00 in the morning and I was preparing for work, I told him I couldn’t chat. He assured me that they were available until 4.00 and offered to ring me back around 3.00. The individual on the line claimed to represent BT Open Reach and alleged that there was harmful software on my computer. They insisted that I switch on my device so they could guide me through the process of fixing it. I requested that they put the instructions in writing so I could attend to it when I had time. Notably, they didn’t even bother to address me by my name.
