Received a rather alarming phone call today - it was a pre-recorded voicemail asserting that there were unpaid taxes with HMRC. Strangely, they didn’t mention any specific names or addresses, leaving one utterly baffled about whom they were targeting. The message went on to say that if I didn’t press 1 to speak with an advisor at once, there’d be a warrant issued for my arrest! This is obviously a dodgy scam; HMRC would never reach out about tax issues in such a manner. They don't operate that way, and they certainly wouldn't make threats over a recorded line without identifying the individual involved!

Got a call with an automated message saying I owed taxes to HMRC, but it didn’t give any name or address to say who the warning was actually for. It said if you don’t press 1 to speak to an advisor straight away, a warrant will be issued and you’d be arrested. Pretty obviously a scam - HMRC wouldn’t ever send a recorded call like that, and they certainly wouldn’t scare people with arrest threats. Plus, they’d normally mention the person’s name, not just some generic threat. Definitely phishing.
