7 yearsA few weeks back, I got a strange call that sort of followed this pattern - they kept mentioning £600 and told me to press 1. I ignored that instruction and instead phoned my credit card provider on a different phone. They confirmed there was nothing wrong. What struck me was that the caller claimed to be from MBNA, a company I do bank with, although only occasionally, maybe once every couple of months. Funny enough, I’d just used that card only hours before the call came through.MBNA7 yearsGot a call saying they were from VISA about a charge of around £600 someone tried to put through in the States. Seemed a bit fishy, like they wanted to check if it was me or not. Didn't really trust it so I hung up just to be safe.USA8 yearsI received a call earlier from an Indian call centre. They claimed that my BT line had been compromised. Honestly, it sounds completely implausible! Definitely a scam!10 yearsSomeone with a Chinese accent called me claiming to be from BT, saying he could fix my internet issues. I mentioned I was actually with Virgin, but he insisted he could help if I switched on my computer. I told him to buzz off, ended the call, and reported it to the fraud team. Don’t fall for this rubbish scam.BTVirgin10 yearsThis morning my brother got a call from someone claiming to be from BT Openworld. They said they could repair his computer for just £2.90, but when he asked his credit card provider later, he discovered he'd been billed £241.99. I'd recommend not answering calls from this number at all.10 yearsGot a call today from someone claiming to be with BT, but they had a weird American accent! Also, there was a noticeable pause before they spoke, so I knew it wasn’t a local call. This bloke said he wanted to talk about my broadband. I told him I don't even have broadband. Then he said he wasn’t a broadband provider, so I asked him why on earth I should be talking to him about broadband at all. Before I could say anything else, he just hung up! That’s a new one - usually, I ask them to take me off their list first before ending the call. Really dodgy stuff. :(BT10 yearsThis number called me twice today. Some guy with an Indian accent saying he was from 'BT' and that there was an issue with my internet. I told him everything was fine, wished him a lovely day and said goodbye before hanging up. Then he called back asking why I ended the call! I just hung up again :DBT10 yearsJust got a call from a guy with an Indian accent who said his name was Martin Wilson and he was from Virgin Media. He claimed our internet was full of some sort of malware and said they were going to cut it off for like 4 to 6 months. A woman with an Indian accent was telling me my Windows PC had a virus and said since I’m a BT customer, she could help if I let her access my computer through BT internet. Right away I knew it was a scam. So, I decided to have a bit of fun and started trying to sell them a washing machine with a great bargain, even mentioned chucking some kitchen gear through their window! They didn't take kindly to it and told me to buzz off before slamming down. Each time it was a different caller but all saying they were from the same firm. The guy had a strong Indian accent and told me hackers were trying to break into my connection. I asked for details on the supposed issue and how he planned to fix it, but he just kept pushing me to switch on my laptop. I wasn’t having any of it and called him out as a scammer. Then they rang back and I picked up. Some lady claimed she was from BT and said they'd been watching my computer for weeks because it had a virus. I told her straight up she was making it up. They spoke in a really bad mix of English and some foreign language. When I checked the link they sent, it was flagged as a malware site and my firewall stopped it. The person on the phone got really rude and hung up on me saying something like, 'okay, if you don't trust me then'.10 yearsGot three calls from them today, and they were swearing a lot. They kept saying someone had hacked my computer and kept telling me to "open this page" or "do this man". I told them I didn’t trust what they were saying and hung up. Then, I rang Plusnet since that’s my provider, and they checked my wifi - no issues at all. After that, I phoned BT just to be sure, and they said it was all rubbish. Seriously, don’t fall for it, it’s all a scam.PlusnetBT10 yearsHere’s a useful trick - if you get a call out of the blue, just say you’re tied up watching something a bit naughty. It really annoys them once they catch on that you’re not falling for their spiel and they're not in control any more. Some might say it's a bit cheeky or borderline rude, but speaking as someone who studies people, this little move puts you back in charge and can scare off the timewasters. Imagine if everyone responded like this, calls from pushy marketers might eventually vanish.
