A lady with a thick Scottish accent told me I had signed up for a £1000 Tesco gift card, which was rather foolish considering I'd only given my phone number-no bank info at all. She insisted her company was located in Glasgow, yet the call was from Edinburgh. The moment she mentioned, “this isn’t a scam,” that immediately set off alarm bells for me, so I promptly hung up. Just a few minutes later, I was bombarded with a text containing a dodgy link (which I wisely chose not to click). Just a note of caution for everyone: steer clear of competitions that seem too good to be true, and refrain from clicking on any links they send, as they often lead to malware.

I usually don’t answer calls from unknown numbers that aren’t saved in my contacts. I let it go to voicemail first, and if I get one, I decide what to do next. If there’s no voicemail, I look the number up here. After seeing what this one was, I’ve blocked and deleted it. Still, I notice some folks pick up these calls - really, pls don’t. Answering just encourages them to keep at it. The only way to stop these calls is to not answer at all, cause then the system doesn’t work.

If there’s no message, I do a bit of digging on sites like this to figure out what's going on. Having researched this number, I’ve now blocked and removed it from my phone. I’ve noticed quite a few folks still picking up, though! I urge everyone not to do that: answering these calls only encourages them to keep coming. When people engage with these calls, it keeps the whole system going, which is the last thing we need. The more people ignore them, the more likely the system will falter.

If I don't receive one, I tend to look it up on this site and others to figure out what’s going on. That said, I've now blocked and removed this number from my phone. Yet I notice that others still pick up! Please avoid doing that: Every answer just reinforces the system, which we’re trying to undermine. Those who engage with these calls inadvertently keep the whole thing running. If we all just let them go unanswered, then the system would eventually collapse.
