Got a call from a guy who said he was from EDF, sounded Indian and kept pushing me for a reference number off my bill. He mentioned something about other firms in my postcode and questioned some amounts on the invoice. I’m already dealing with a problem with EDF but I didn’t think they’d be ringing me directly. While he was chatting, I looked up the number online and found out it was a scam, so I told him I knew it was dodgy and ended the call pretty sharpish.

Seems like this number is back in action, attempting that energy con once more. Got a call from 0131 6188 240, sounded like it was from British Gas or so they said. This guy with a strong Asian accent called himself Alex William and said the meter reader had mixed up our readings with a different company’s, even knew the postcode - said it was B33 0TL. He told me to ignore a bill of about £1800. When I asked for his full name and contact number, he gave me a dodgy number, 02236587850, but couldn’t provide the official British Gas company number. Seemed like a rubbish attempt at a scam, I told him as much. Not sure exactly what the scam angle was though.

Got a call from some bloke with an accent, almost fell for it. He claimed the meter number we have is incorrect. We’re actually in the middle of switching from EDF to Octopus, so it sounded fairly legit. He talked me through it so smoothly. In the end, I asked him to send any questions by email, not sure what he was really after.

Got a call from this number claiming to be from SSE, asking for details about one of our accounts. I told them we don’t have any active accounts with them anymore, but the caller insisted the account hadn’t been properly closed. I told them that was their problem, not ours. We ended up going back and forth, with him asking questions I wasn’t comfortable answering. I told him to send any outstanding bills by email if there was actually money owed, otherwise I didn’t understand the purpose of the call. Then, out of nowhere, he just ended the call!
