A caller purporting to be from 'Windows' insisted that my system had been compromised. They provided this number along with a Microsoft address when I pressed them for details. I reached out to the Microsoft office in Reading, and they assured me it was indeed a scam; they stated that they never contact customers directly. The individual on the phone even went so far as to threaten that my computer would be blocked if I failed to provide the information they sought. I've now reported this incident to Action Fraud.
