I received a recorded message purporting to be from HMRC, warning that I or my solicitor must return the call forthwith, or I would face serious legal repercussions. So, I decided to ring the number using another phone. The chap who answered had an accent reminiscent of India or Pakistan and worked in what sounded like a chaotic call centre, claiming to represent the HMRC’s London headquarters, particularly the tax crime fraud division. He introduced himself as Shane McGowan and then requested my name, which prompted me to disconnect. Clearly, this was a scam, but it did pique my curiosity, especially since they were using a standard geographic telephone number.
