For me, the smartest move is to let the call go to voicemail and then call back. Real people don’t usually mind if you do that. But when I tried phoning this number back, it just said it wasn’t in service. Reading through other posts here, it feels like this is another scammer trying their luck. Honestly, I’m really glad I found this site - it’s stopped me from falling into some nasty traps more than once.

Someone rang me pretending to be from a phone provider, saying they could ‘cancel’ my contract and give me a better deal. They wouldn’t accept me saying no and kept pushing until I finally hung up. Seems like they were just after my info - definitely a dodgy call.

Got a call from someone saying they were Carphone Warehouse. Turns out it was just another dodgy cold call scam. Currys, which is the same company, has made it clear on their site that they never make unsolicited calls like that.

Got a call from a bloke saying he was from PC World with some amazing offer on an iPhone 14. The line was dead silent for a bit before he started talking, which made me suspicious straight away. I wouldn’t ever suggest ringing back a number you don’t know, it’s not really worth the risk. There’s a chance it might be one of those wangiri scams where you end up unwittingly giving away your details or ringing premium rate lines. Loads of times these crooks use randomly generated numbers, so sometimes the call might actually come from someone innocent who has no idea what’s going on. If you spot something fishy, make sure to report it. Just look up ‘action fraud’ online and you’ll find the official UK police site where you can report phishing and other scams quickly.
