I received a phone call from someone claiming to be able to reduce our electricity VAT charges as we are a charity. However, I knew that this was incorrect and not how it works. The caller kept asking me who our supplier was, but I replied that I did not know. When I asked where she got my number from, she mentioned the name of the scout group treasurer. I highly doubt that he would have given out my contact information. She mentioned that she had been trying to reach the treasurer but received no response, so she asked if I could confirm his number. However, the number she had was one digit off (though I didn't disclose this). When I refused to give her the correct number, she abruptly ended the call. I checked our charity commission site, and there are no telephone numbers available. I'm now left wondering where she obtained my name and number. It's quite evident that it was a scam, but it initially appeared very convincing.
