9 yearsI picked up the phone and was greeted by someone pretending to be from the electricity company, claiming that our power was set to be switched off in just 45 minutes. They mentioned that our auto-payment with FPL wasn’t current and demanded immediate payment. Their elaborate scheme involved asking us to embark on a sort of treasure hunt-telling us to dash to either Dollar Tree or CVS to purchase a gift card, specifically for a MoneyPak, and then to share the code with them. Given the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, where power and fuel were already scarce, the request seemed utterly ridiculous. They were insisting we owed a single bill, but in reality, they had combined all of our FPL charges. To top it off, they didn’t even have our complete account number.
