Complete rip-off. While I was browsing online, a message suddenly appeared on my screen saying:

"**Microsoft Security Alert**

Attention Windows 8.1 user

Unauthorized attempts detected to access your passwords, bank details, and monitor your browsing activity. Security Centre and Firewall services on your Windows 8.1 are turned off.
Error Code: 0X8007042C"

They then told me to ring 1-800-901-6142. I gave it a ring, but something felt off, so I ended the call straight away. They tried calling back a couple of times from the number 714-576-5873, but with different names showing on caller ID. Oddly, they never left a voicemail. After restarting my laptop, the message disappeared. I searched up the number and found this website - turns out it’s a scam. So if you see this message, just restart your PC and don’t call any numbers they give you.

My laptop showed some pop-up saying it was a Microsoft security alert and gave a free phone number: 1 800-901-6142. Whatever you do, do NOT ring them or press any links. It's definitely dodgy.

My screen suddenly showed one of those “computer locked” alerts, and I spotted the number as one I’ve seen linked to scams before. Even so, I rang the caller back - a bloke with an Indian accent who launched into his spiel about fixing my PC and all that nonsense. I just played along and kept him chatting for a good hour, and every five minutes he was begging me to let him sort my computer out. In the end, it was a laugh and at least I tied him up so someone else didn’t have to put up with his rubbish.

There’s this one website I visit sometimes that keeps showing me a "BLUE SCREEN WARNING" message saying my bank details and personal info are being hacked. It also warns that my computer is locked and tells me not to shut it down. Each time I called the phone numbers on the screen, they were always different. But after I rebooted my computer, everything was back to normal like nothing happened. Don’t ever share your details with them - it’s definitely a scam!

I just got hit with one of those annoying popups claiming my PC is locked and telling me to ring 800-901-6142. Luckily, I was prepared for their nonsense! I unleashed a bunch of unfiltered remarks that I'm pretty sure made it clear I wasn’t about to get fooled by their scam. Just a heads up, don’t trust any popup that isn’t directly from Microsoft or your antivirus software - if you’ve even got one set up!

Cheers for sharing this post. I got the same kind of pop-up on my main PC at home. Luckily, I’m pretty cautious about dodgy scams and quickly looked up the number using my laptop. Found a few write-ups about Microsoft-related scams linked to that number. Just restarted my computer a few times afterwards and it seems fine. It’s great you’ve put this info out there about the scam though.

Im having this exact issue too. Its locking up my computer and popping up that my pc is infected with a virus. Really annoying!

I got a popup on my browser in Windows 8 saying my license had run out, and my PC was locked. It told me to ring Microsoft support on 1-800-901-6142. When I looked up that number, loads of people said it was a scam, some kind of malware.

For the last few days, I've been getting annoying fake virus alerts on my computer saying my Windows 7 licence isn't valid (which isn’t true at all). The pop-ups warn that I'll lose all my files if I don’t ring this support number right away. Total scam!
