My daughter got caught up in this scam, along with a few others before. What I’ve found works best is to search online for the number that sent the initial text, which is usually a premium rate number. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a free number, like an 0800, linked to the company. You can then call them and ask them to stop sending the messages. Don’t text 'STOP' yourself though, as that could end up costing you. Typically, after a few weeks, they’ll send another message reminding you that you’re being charged around £4.50 a week and to unsubscribe by texting 'STOP'. But unless you keep a close eye on your phone bill, you might not notice the charges and get ripped off. When I spoke to this dodgy firm, they claimed people accidentally click on the ‘TEXT-PLAY’ banner while browsing and enter a pin, but honestly, that banner’s so cleverly hidden most folks probably don’t even realise they’re being scammed.
