We've recently noticed a charge of £21.98 on our latest bill, but we definitely didn't place that call-no one was even at home when it supposedly happened. It seems a bit dubious to me, almost like a scam. The tricky part is that it appears to have come from our phone, making it hard to contest!

Got a charge for a call costing £39.20 on 21st Dec 2016 that was never placed. My mum’s 85, sharp as a tack, and doesn’t even use directory enquiries, so there’s no way she made that call. The customer service team were sympathetic but refused to give a refund for a call that didn’t happen. Seriously, BT, sort yourselves out and look into this properly!

I got told to ring this number without any heads up from the first caller that it might cost a bomb. The company that sent me here was going through admin. Not sure how much I might end up paying but I’m worried about the bill arriving. Is that 0800 refund line actually free? Don’t want to find myself in a worse mess.

I gave a bell to Lincolnshire County Council’s Adult Care services and was informed there was an issue with the line but I’d be patched through soon. Imagine my surprise when I received a bill for £35.77 for just under 9 minutes of chatting with a social worker!

My husband mistakenly dialled the wrong number and ended up speaking to 1118820, who instructed him to call 118820. He followed their advice, only to be hit with a bill of £43.87! Had he known the cost upfront, he would never have gone along with it. I've tried reaching out to their customer service, but all they’ve reimbursed is a paltry £7.09 for a call he didn’t even make. I read somewhere that they’re supposed to issue refunds within 28 days of a complaint, but it seems they're avoiding their responsibility. I'm seriously considering ditching our landline altogether! Is there anyone who can help? This situation feels utterly scandalous!

I think I got sent to 118820 through some sneaky tactic and then a recorded message said there was a problem. I spent £26.33 on a call that lasted about six minutes. How is this sort of scam still happening? What can we honest folks do to stop it? It feels like it’s been going on way too long now.

I’ve had a similar experience - didn’t make the call to this number either, yet found myself billed £18.99 for a rather brief 4 and a half minutes of chat. Tried sorting it out with EE, but they’re not offering any sort of refund. Totally frustrating!

My folks have noticed a baffling charge of £35.60 on their bill, linked to the number 118820 - a number they’ve never even dialled or heard of! On that very day, my mother was chatting with the local hospital when her call was disrupted by an incomprehensible voice from a gent with an Indian accent, then to her dismay, the call just cut off. Now we’ve stumbled upon this unexplained charge on their statement. They have their landline with the Post Office, but honestly, dealing with them is like trying to find a needle in a haystack! What steps can we take to prevent others from falling victim to this kind of scam?

I've noticed that I was charged £118.82 on my British Telecom bill. I rang a number to sort out a refund that I was assured I’d receive, yet my account shows a mere £7.09 refunded. To complicate matters, I’m still owed £43.87. What steps can I take? I’ve attempted to get in touch with the number I previously spoke to regarding the refund, but it seems to be disconnected now. Any guidance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I've just noticed a rather hefty fee of £47.47 on my bill for a 12-minute call that I certainly didn't make! I've spoken to BT, but they're absolutely unhelpful. To add to the confusion, I received a call claiming there were issues with our exchange, and I supposedly needed to chat with some engineer. Can anyone shed light on who I should get in touch with to sort this mess out or potentially have the charge overturned? BT seems to be turning a blind eye!

Can someone tell me the price for this service? I’m really not happy with it and want my money back. If you want a refund, you need to ring 08003101010 and ask for Dianne because PhonepayPlus doesn’t give them our info. Just so you know, calls to 0871 numbers are 10p a minute, while 118472 and 118820 numbers are £2.50 upfront then £3.01 per minute. Don’t forget, these charges are plus any network fees and tax.

On October 18th, there was a charge of £51.00 for the number 118820 on our bill, which otherwise showed no calls to that number. We have no clue where that number appeared from and definitely didn’t make the call. We got in touch with BitBut but they couldn’t provide any assistance. I'm really upset as it pushed our total bill close to £200.

I've just received a bill for £33 from this number. I’ve been in touch with my mobile provider, and they’ve promptly blocked all premium-rate calls and adjusted my spending cap to zero since I pay a flat monthly rate for my calls. This should ensure I don’t face a similar situation again. They’re also working on securing a refund for me. I emphasised that they have a responsibility to safeguard customers like myself from such scams in the future. I'm quite relieved that I’m not likely to be caught out by this again. Now I just have to hope that the refund comes through!

I attempted to call a reliable number I found online, a number I've used without issue in the past. On this occasion, I was connected to a rather "charming lady" who claimed to be affiliated with the company. She informed me that there were some difficulties with the phone line, and she offered to connect me with them. Throughout our conversation, she kept probing for the number I had dialled. Eventually, she managed to reach the genuine company and mentioned that I could be transferred, though it would set me back £4.00 a minute (but there would be no additional fee for making the call). I immediately told her to hold off and insisted that they should ring me instead. Remarkably, she arranged for them to call me back just a minute later. To sum it up, I ended up racking up a £50.00 charge on my bill. Fortunately, my phone provider has documented the incident and is looking into obtaining a refund for me.

On 14th November at around 16:26, we got billed £28.96 for a 7 minute call to 118820, which we never actually made. Sky told us that before the charge, there was a local call to 01527 312052 just minutes earlier. I tried ringing 01527 312082 to see who owns that number, but it just went to an automated message saying there’s a fault and to call 118820 instead. Feels like some kind of scam. Is there anything we can do about this?

On that specific day, my mother, who is visually impaired, was the sole occupant of our home. There's absolutely no way she could have placed that call. She’s only got three speed dial contacts, you see. Yet, I noticed an unexpected charge of £19.33 on my phone bill. How on earth could that happen?

Greetings, everyone!
Much like many of you, I was taken aback when I discovered a call had been placed to 118820.
I’m convinced we never dialled that number, and for a duration of 5 minutes and 22.39 seconds, the cost seems rather exorbitant for such a brief chat.

My mum tried reaching Glan Clwyd Hospital and mixed up the area code; she dialled 01492 448740 instead of the correct 01745. Instead of getting through, she was met with an automated message indicating there was an issue with the line and advised to ring 118820. After connecting with a woman there, she ended up on hold for quite a while. Eventually, the woman informed her that the hospital was experiencing delays with appointments and promised that an appointment would be sent her way soon. Sadly, my mum ended up being billed £30.07 for the call!

Upon reviewing the phone bill for our elderly parents, we were utterly astonished to find they were billed £23.59 for a call lasting merely 5.34 minutes, alongside a £7.09 charge for a brief 19-second call that occurred just moments earlier to the same number, 118820. Given their vulnerable situation, it’s likely they won't recall the details of these calls. What steps can we take to safeguard them from such charges in the future?

They’re quite vulnerable and probably wouldn’t recall what those calls were for at all. Does anyone know how we can stop this from happening again?

Yesterday, I attempted to ring our GP and was met with a bloke's voice repeating “telephone 118820” rather slowly, indicating there was an issue with the line. Feeling a bit perplexed, I dialled the number and ended up speaking to a female operator who assured me she'd sort out the connection if I would just hold on. However, when she started to ask me questions in a rather probing manner, I got a bit wary and decided to hang up.

I’ve just looked at my BT bill and spotted a rather hefty charge for a call to the number 118820 on the 28th of June. Apparently, I was on the line for a whole ten minutes and it’s set me back a whopping £45! I haven’t a clue who I was even speaking to. What a mystery!

I’ve just had a rather alarming revelation upon reviewing my latest phone bill-£31.097 for a call to 118820 that I assure you I didn’t make! When I reached out to BT to voice my concerns, they insisted it was indeed a call I had placed and that I’m obligated to settle the full amount. I recently had a rather unpleasant surprise when my phone bill arrived, indicating an astonishing charge of £31.097 for a call to 118820, a call I categorically did not place. We've been charged £29.01 for allegedly calling this number while I was at my workplace. I had a chat with BT, but it felt like banging my head against a wall. Why on earth are we being billed when it’s clear we didn’t contact 118820? They must be aware it's a sham, yet they seem utterly indifferent to our concerns, slapping us with these charges. My mum received a rather amusing phone call, attempting to sell her a device to block pesky calls. Naturally, I decided to ring the number myself, only to be met with a rather frustrating "error" notification that instructed me to contact 118 820 instead. Then, just a week later, she checked her phone bill and discovered a whopping £29 charge for a seven-minute conversation. It’s infuriating that no one seems willing to take responsibility for this ordeal. I’m completely fuming over how this has all been handled, particularly since I wasn't at all informed about any potential charges during that conversation, despite what their so-called customer service representative claimed.

I reached out to the 118 helpline, suspecting I may have fallen victim to a scam. Fortunately, Tina was an absolute delight and swiftly located the number I had called. When I dialled my landline from my mobile, I received an automated message stating that my BT landline was out of service and I needed to call 118820. However, my landline was perfectly functional. I raised a complaint with BT through their online chat service, and they subsequently rectified the interruption on my mobile line, despite my mobile provider being O2 and not BT. I also reached out to 118820 to voice my concerns, and naturally, they pointed the finger at BT. They advised me that if BT were to charge me for the 118820 call, I should contact them on 0800 3101070 to get that fee waived, mentioning Dianne in the process. We'll see how that plays out. I found myself attempting to return a rather vague voicemail using what seemed like a standard phone number. However, upon making the call, I was informed that there was a problem with the line. They suggested I reach out to 118820, where an operator would assist in directing my call to the right number. Quite the hassle, to say the least!

I recently had a baffling experience when reviewing my BT statement, and much to my astonishment, I came across a charge of £90.31 for a call made on May 23rd that lasted just over 24 minutes. I was completely taken aback! I reached out to BT inquiring about the identity of the number involved, but predictably, they were unable to provide any information. I can hardly remember making such a call, so I dialled 0800800150 for assistance. Unfortunately, their only advice was to contact another number, 08003101070, which is meant for customer services. The chap I spoke with there was quite accommodating and took down my details. He assured me that they would follow up within 48 hours. I’ve received a message from One Minute Helpdesk, stating they'll get in touch this afternoon. Should I get no resolution from them, I’ll have no choice but to report this to Action Fraud, as it truly feels like a criminal matter.

I've just opened my latest bill from BT and, good grief, what a shocker! After being directed by the docs to ring this number due to a fault on the line, I thought I was doing the right thing. Yet, for a mere five-minute call, I've been slapped with a whopping £21.88 charge! I'm absolutely fuming. Honestly, I can’t believe this sort of thing is permissible. BT, really, you ought to hang your heads in disgrace!

On the 1st of June 2016, BT slapped us with a bill of £19.53 for a call to this number. When I contacted BT about it, they insisted that the call originated from our landline and that we’d need to cough up the fee. I assure you, we’ve not dialled this number-being pensioners, we’re quite cautious with our phone use. Can anyone lend a hand in sorting this out?

My mother just opened her phone bill and couldn’t believe her eyes - a staggering £25 fee appeared for a single call! Normally, she sticks to her mobile for free calls, so this was a shocker. The call in question was to 118 820, and considering she wasn’t even at home on the day it was supposedly made, she reached out to BT for clarification. Unfortunately, the customer service reps weren’t much help, insisting that it was a “Service Number” and the charge was unavoidable. After doing some sleuthing online, I stumbled across numerous warnings about this being a rip-off scheme, and apparently, the company behind it was fined £60,000 back in 2014. A word of advice: if you ever find yourself being redirected to this number - steer clear! It’s a premium rate line that can charge you upwards of £2.50 a minute, not to mention an additional £2.50 just to connect the call.

On the 15th of February 2016 at 09:13, I had a call lasting four minutes and one second that set me back £17.99. A little while later, on the 20th of April 2016 at 18:27, I spoke for two minutes and twenty-two seconds, which cost me £12.06. Feel free to reach me at [email protected].

I've just spotted a number on my most recent phone statement that has a £17 fee attached to it. Funny thing is, I was chatting with the DWP when that call happened, and that's supposed to be a free number. Quite strange, isn't it?

Once again, it appears that another individual has fallen prey to the 118820 con. I was shocked to find a charge of £10.08 for a call lasting a mere 1 minute and 49 seconds-one that I can’t recall making at all! Quite infuriating, to say the least!

I’ve just been hit with a bill of £16.78 from B.T for a call to this number. It's infuriating! They’re refusing to accept that I didn’t even ring it, as I was busy chatting with someone else. Now they’re insisting that I cough up the amount!

Recently, I've found myself embroiled in sorting out my brother's financial matters, as he's now grappling with dementia. Having put the lasting power of attorney into motion, I've been busy informing all relevant companies about his relocation to a care facility and requesting the cessation of services at his previous address. However, dealing with TalkTalk has been an absolute nightmare-it’s been dragged out for weeks. Just today, I finally managed to gain access to his account, only to discover the following dubious charges:
18/01 14:30 118820 SC072 00:00:22 £7.06
18/01 13:54 118820 SC072 00:04:14 £18.65

This is an utter swindle! Is there any course of action I can take regarding this?

I received a bill for £15.78 after a brief three-minute call on the 29th of February at precisely 13:07. The number listed is 118820 SCO72. It's baffling, really, as I cannot for the life of me recall ever dialing this number or even having an inkling of who it could belong to.

For anyone who's had the misfortune of dealing with the 118820 number, I urge you to reach out to Action Fraud and Phone-Pay Plus immediately. These organisations are currently probing into the shady practices of this company. They've faced substantial penalties from the courts in the past, yet it seems they're still raking in the cash and continuing their dubious activities without hesitation. Clearly, those fines haven't done a thing to deter them!

I've just discovered a couple of calls to 118500 amounting to £21.11, and another one hitting £23.48 on our BT invoice. It's high time this scam gets put to rest, as we certainly didn’t make those calls!

We discovered an unexpected charge of over £30 on our bill for a call we certainly never made. In a moment of misguided curiosity, I went ahead and dialled the troublesome number listed above, only to be greeted with yet another bill the following month, this time for just over £30 again. I flagged the issue with BT, who duly acknowledged my complaint, yet it seems no substantial measures were taken. How on earth are these individuals allowed to operate unchecked? It’s quite concerning, especially for the vulnerable, like the elderly, who may easily fall victim to such scams without even realising it. They seem to levy fees just for picking up the phone, then continue to pile on charges by the minute-or even for mere fragments of time!

Dear EE, I hope this message finds you well. I recently took a gander at my latest bill and noticed a rather puzzling charge: "17/12/2015 14:05 118820 SC72 not in plan 00:05:59 £25.030". From what I can gather, it appears that this 118820 number may be something of a scam operation that has somehow managed to hijack my calls, thus resulting in this rather hefty fee (at 698p for the connection, including the first 60 seconds, and then 349p per minute thereafter!). I must express my dissatisfaction with this charge and would kindly request that you remove it. Should this matter remain unresolved, I will have no choice but to consider alternative service providers. Best regards, Robert Hall

I’ve just spotted some suspicious charges on my elderly mum’s phone bill. She’s been billed for calls totalling £22.16 and £22.05 to a number she insists she’s never called. Living by herself, her phone means the world to her - it’s her connection to the outside. I’ll be reaching out to BT to make it clear that she won’t be bearing the cost of these bogus charges. It’s downright scandalous, and whoever’s behind this should face serious consequences, as it’s nothing short of fraud. Best, Carole Ashcroft

I've just received my latest BT phone statement, and I've noticed a charge of £17.14 for a call to 118820, which I know I never made. The document titled "Your Usage and Call Details" outlines this, but I can assure you I have no recollection of dialling that number or racking up that expense. I believe I’ve got a strong case for a reimbursement here!

I've encountered the same hassle as many others. I mistakenly dialled the wrong number, and these 118 folks intercepted the call, slapping a ridiculous fee of £15.41 per minute, plus VAT, on me. There was no prompt like "number not recognised, please check and try again?" to warn me. I'm curious if others had the same experience, as I certainly wasn’t informed about these outrageous costs until my phone bill arrived. My service provider has been no help either, insisting that I cough up the fraudulent charges along with my regular bill. I adamantly refused. By paying for these unjust charges, we inadvertently support the scam. If everyone stands firm and refuses to pay, those con artists won't profit, and perhaps the telecom companies will take action to put a stop to them!

I received charges for two calls from 118820 on the 12th and 21st of October, totalling more than £21. At no point was I informed that these calls were of a premium nature. I have a hunch that I was redirected from a different number. I'm currently with BT-would it be possible for me to claim a refund for this? You can reach me at [email protected].

I rang a company’s landline but, when the call failed to go through, an automated voice came on stating that there was an issue with the line. It instructed me to hold on for a redirection. Instinctively, I hung up, as I had a feeling that something was amiss. I've now received my BT bill, and to my dismay, that rather dodgy 'message' has set me back £15.68!

I reached out to my service provider after noticing my bill had shot up unexpectedly, and it turns out this particular number was responsible for a charge of £28. I've only just switched my phone service to Plusnet and encountered a rather troublesome situation. When I attempted to dial a number, I was advised of an issue and referred to call 118820 for assistance. I went ahead and called, but when I inquired if the chap on the line was affiliated with Plusnet, he mentioned that I had opted for 118820. My curiosity then got the better of me and I asked about any charges, to which he bluntly replied that it was charging £3.49 per minute! I promptly hung up. Is this some sort of Plusnet ruse? During my 12 years with BT, I never faced such nonsense, but it seems to have begun the moment I transitioned to Plusnet. I reckon my call lasted under a minute, yet I'm bracing myself for that hefty £3.49 charge. This feels like nothing short of a scam!

We’ve had a rather frustrating run-in with the number 118820, racking up charges to the tune of £80.41 in total. I received an email suggesting that I could apply for a refund, but what a complete farce that was! They claimed we had dialled a wrong number initially and rejected our request for a 50% refund. To make matters worse, there were two separate charges on our account, and they never mentioned that we were calling a premium rate number. After making four calls to their claims line, 08003101010, I simply gave up. It’s quite clear that they’re not particularly bothered about how many individuals fall victim to this sort of trickery, all while pocketing a tidy sum. The penalties they face seem to have no real impact.

We were completely blindsided by that bill-£30.14 for just eleven minutes! At no point were we informed about the charges. This kind of thing really needs to be addressed. It’s particularly tough for the elderly to cope with such unexpected expenses.

I've been dealing with some rather strange occurrences with my phone lately. My incoming calls ring just a couple of times before there's a weird crackling sound, followed by a message instructing me to ring 118820, claiming there's an issue with my line. I gave it a go, and just as I was halfway through, my network decided to cut me off, citing that I'd reached my credit limit, which I have set up for my account. Thankfully, my provider was decent enough to refund me the £25.50. I’ve also taken the precaution of blocking those troublesome numbers. Currently, my landline provider Sky is investigating the matter, but they’ve yet to uncover any faults. They can reach me without a hitch, but it appears that no one else can get through. Quite the predicament, isn’t it?

I was hunting for the contact number of the Cuban embassy on the 8th of April. Eventually, I came across this one. My wife gave it a ring but we got no response. She stayed on the line for about six minutes, and our phone provider hit us with a £23 charge for that call which never went through. EE has assured me they'll sort out a refund, but to date, nothing has come through.

I called a company back in January and received a message indicating that the number was inactive. This led me to dial 118820 for assistance. To my delight, a charming gentleman answered and was quite obliging, putting me on hold briefly to track down the details I required! The call stretched on for just a bit over seven minutes. However, when I later examined my phone bill and found it to be alarmingly inflated, I discovered I was slapped with a £26.64 charge for that brief chat. Absolutely furious!

I was completely unaware of 118850 until I spotted a charge of £20 on my bill. It's worth noting that I never dial any number starting with 118. Clearly, this seems like a dodgy scheme and it's high time something was done about it. Is there any chance of retrieving the lost funds?

I received a rather peculiar phone call from a gentleman using a London number, claiming to hail from Blackburn. He went on to inquire if I was (my name) but abruptly ended the conversation mid-sentence. Curious, I rang the London number back and was met with a recorded message directing me to call 118820. When I did, a friendly young lady answered and asked which number I needed assistance with. I explained that I’d been given their number by the caller just before the line went dead. She advised me to disregard the previous call, mentioning that their lines had been compromised and that both the authorities and OFFCOM were looking into it. I mentioned that the caller had mentioned someone I know, and she confirmed that scammers often do that. Her advice was straightforward: should they ring again, just hang up straight away, as their calls are designed to keep your number racking up charges whilst they’re prattling on. It's a scam, plain and simple!

We've noticed a charge on our phone bill for a 5-minute call to 118820, which has raised some eyebrows. We were definitely at home, but we certainly didn’t make that call.
