I received a call from an unfamiliar number, so I chose not to pick up.

I have a strong suspicion that this was a dodgy call. The line was completely silent apart from some shuffling noises in the background. I reckon they were expecting me to ring them back, which would undoubtedly lead to a hefty telephone bill for me, while lining their pockets. I did a bit of digging into 090 number charges and came across some information. Essentially, when you ring 09 numbers, you're hit with two types of fees: an access charge that goes to your provider, and a service charge set by the company you're trying to contact. The service charge for these calls can vary dramatically, from a mere penny up to a staggering £3.60 per minute. On top of that, there's often a one-off call cost that can range from 5p right up to £6. It's a real trap!
