08979091042 Summary (Read all comments)

Phone number ☎️ 08979091042 👆 is reported as a recurring issue predominantly affecting Sky network customers, where a specific 0897 number erroneously appears on the recipient’s phone instead of the actual caller’s number. This glitch, linked to call routing faults within the network, causes confusion and concern, with affected users often seeing unknown or suspicious numbers in place of familiar contacts. While some suspect it to be a scam or hacking attempt, the consensus is that it stems from a technical fault rather than malicious intent. Users are advised to be cautious, avoid returning calls to the displayed number, and report issues directly to their provider. Sky and network operators are reportedly investigating and working on resolutions, with some recommending SIM replacements or network resets.

Sometimes I just let them run through their usual spiel, then I say, as kindly as I can, "I get it, times are rough and you need the cash. We've all had to take jobs we didn't enjoy just to get by. But honestly, is this job making YOU happy? Do you clock off feeling proud you helped someone? Are you excited to start your day? Surely you deserve something better than this."

These 08979 digits are typically employed by telecom companies for redirecting calls. Ordinarily, they operate seamlessly in the background, but due to a network glitch, this number has been revealed to the recipient of the call rather than the true number of the individual placing the call.

This keeps happening to me as well. I’m with Sky. Whenever I call my son, this number shows up on his phone instead.

I'd say this number seems alright, especially with the sensible explanations in the earlier comments saying it's an issue with Sky's network. Lately, and only now and then, this number shows up when my son phones me (he's with Sky). It's definitely him, and I can't spot anything dodgy about it. Still, none of us enjoy seeing sketchy-looking numbers pop up that might be scams or something dodgy. I'll get my son to follow up with Sky about it just to be sure.

It was actually my nan ringing, but this number popped up instead. It doesn't always do it, and when they pick up, it is her talking. Still, it's quite puzzling and a bit worrying. She uses Sky for her phone.

Got a call off my Gran and the number on her phone matched this one. She was adamant it's been the same number for around 40 years. After checking the messages here, it looks like others are having the same issue, and since she's with Sky, it's probably just a glitch.

This seems to be a problem with the network when calls are made via the Sky network. The 08979 numbers are normally used by network providers to route calls, and they usually stay hidden from the person receiving the call. But because of a network glitch, this number is showing up instead of the real number of the caller.

Got a call from a number that looked like my mum’s - we chat daily - so I mentioned it to her but she said she didn’t call. Not really sure what else I can try apart from asking her to contact Sky and report the problem?

So my other half rang me from her mobile while she was at work. Then this number 08979091042 popped up as a missed call in a text alert, even though I was still on the phone with her. I've got call waiting set to beep if someone else rings, but it never made a sound, just showed the missed call text. Weird, right?

My mum rang me the other day - we chat all the time - but this number popped up. I mentioned it to her and she had no clue about it. We tried calling our daughter and normally her phone shows "Mum and Dad" but this time a strange number popped up instead. When we hung up and called her back, our own number showed up correctly like usual. Not sure who that number belongs to but it doesn't seem like a technical glitch to me. Some bloke I used to work with called me to check if his phone was working properly coz it wasn’t letting him make calls. This number popped up on his screen instead of the one I’ve saved for him. Then, like a second after, he called me again and it showed the correct number, the one I have saved. Pretty sure it's some kind of tech glitch.
6 years
I reckon this is something wrong with the system. Probably best just to ignore it if it rings. Real people usually leave a voicemail or ring again. Hopefully, the glitch will sort itself out by the time they get back in touch, since the issue seems to come and go. I wouldn’t suggest calling this business rate number back.

08979091042 - got three calls from this number, two yesterday and one earlier today. Weirdly, my phone's call blocker labelled it as "John Grants Mobile" which I find pretty odd. I didn’t pick up any of the calls since I don’t know anyone named John Grant, and in my usual call history, it just shows as an unknown number.

When you see this number pop up on your caller ID, it usually means the police or customs are listening in or recording your messages because they’ve tapped into your line. Try dialing 0102 before the number to stop it.

It's just a digit string employed by telecom firms to direct calls to the correct places. Occasionally, a glitch occurs, and this number emerges in place of the actual caller's identity. This means that virtually anyone could be on the other end of that line!

So this number popped up when a mate rang me earlier and I almost didn’t pick up. It was actually someone I chat with all the time, so I’m a bit confused as to why the number showed up like that. Has anyone else had this happen or know why?

Got a call from 08979091042, didn’t pick up since I didn’t know the number. Later checked the voicemail and it was actually my Mum! She called from her landline, she’s with Sky but I’m on a different network. Bit confused about how that happened.

So I rang my mother in law earlier and this number showed up on her phone instead of mine. She was a bit confused and asked if I’d got a new number. Can anyone explain what’s going on?

I use sky mobile, and recently when I called my partner, the number that showed up on her phone wasn't my regular number but this one. She was still able to pick up and knew it was me luckily. I’m not sure why it switched like that, but when I rang her again to check, my usual number appeared. With all the trouble I’ve been having the past few days trying to get my phone to connect with others, I guess it’s just some tech glitch they’re working on sorting out.

Its just a problem with the network, nothing else really.

I rang a mobile from my landline and the person answered saying the number showing on their phone was 08979091042. I ended the call and rang again, then it showed the right number. The day before, I had an automated call claiming to be from Amazon Prime which somehow got past my Sky Talk Shield. I reported both calls to Sky but honestly, the guy I got through to couldn't have cared less. He just said the scam number "was likely piggy backing on my number"!!

Every mate and family member told me that when I call them from my Sky mobile, it comes up as 0897909104. I contacted Sky and they just said they’d look into it but 4 days on, still no update. My phone calls are still getting redirected to this weird number and I’m starting to worry my phone’s been hacked. Feels like my provider isn’t doing anything to sort it out.

Be careful, this looks like it might be a scam setup!

I think this number might’ve somehow got access to my phone.

They called from a hidden number, I’m wondering how on earth they managed to get my contact details.

I called my mate and this dodgy number showed up on her phone. Now she’s having trouble reaching me whenever she tries to call!

I rang a mate and they said the number that showed up was 08979091042, but now that number’s nowhere to be found, it’s disconnected.

Just like everyone else is saying, what the hell is happening?! Is someone else using my number or what???

Just try googling those numbers with the network name, you'll see what's going on here.

Got a call from a number I didn’t recognise, but since there was no voicemail left, I figured it was probably just a telemarketer or a scammer, so I went ahead and blocked it.

A mate of mine from Ilford rang me, and we chatted for about 42 minutes. Odd thing was, the number that popped up on my phone was 08979091042, not her usual one. The call itself was pretty rubbish quality too, kept cutting out. Strange!

I had pretty much the same sort of thing happen to me and I’m honestly a bit worried about how they manage to pull it off and what their real intentions might be?

My mum just had this happen to her, she called me and the number showed as 08979091042. I didn’t pick up the first time, but then she called again right after, and this time it actually showed up as Mum on my phone. I've decided to block any more calls from that number now.

My partner has Sky Mobile as well and when this number showed up, I picked up thinking it was going to be some kind of joke. Turned out it was them! Weird thing was, my phone showed it as possible fraud while it was ringing??

Tried ringing my partner but he didn’t pick up at all. Then I used another phone to call and he said he ignored it, thinking it was some sort of telemarketer because the number that showed up wasn’t my normal one... Honestly, I’m baffled as to how this even happened.

I’ve noticed that whenever I ring someone, this number 08979091042 shows instead of my own caller ID. I’m with Sky Mobile and it’s really starting to worry me. I’m not sure what’s going on or how to fix it. Tried reaching out to Sky’s customer service but just can’t get through to anyone. Has anyone else had this problem?

This number showing up is just a glitch with Sky’s network. Instead of the actual caller’s ID, you get this one. Basically, these 0897 numbers are used by networks to handle call routing between themselves. Nothing dodgy, just technical stuff.

My mum just had a call from the number 08979091042. I ignored it at first, but then she called me back right away and that time it showed up as 'mum' on my phone. I’ve gone ahead and blocked that number now so it can’t ring me anymore.

Just rang my hubby on our home phone and he told me this number popped up on his mobile. We use SKY for our landline.

Tried ringing a mate, but their phone showed this number instead of mine. Bit odd really.

Sometimes, due to technical glitches, the number you see isn’t the real caller’s but one used internally by phone companies to manage call routing. It’s just a behind-the-scenes thing, not the actual person calling.

Last night, I tried ringing my daughter, but her phone showed this strange number instead of mine or ‘Mum.’ She almost ignored the call, surprised when it was actually me on the other end. I’ve gone ahead and blocked that number now, but I’m a bit worried my iPhone might have been hacked. I’m using Sky Mobile, if that matters.

I guess it's the coronavirus that’s causing this, with so many people working from home now to keep away from others.

I got a call on my mobile but when I picked up, nobody said a word. Heard that others have also got calls from this number and reckon it’s quite dodgy. Wouldn’t trust it much.

I'm with Sky and when I rang my boyfriend, my own number popped up even though I never changed any settings. Strangely, instead of him being able to pick up, the call just kept saying it was connecting but never actually went through.

My dad tried calling me from his Sky landline and this number showed up instead. I told him to end the call, then I rang him back on his usual number and it worked fine. Later, he called me again and his proper number appeared. Quite odd, really.

Its a number networks use to connect calls, not a scammer. Sometimes there’s a problem between networks and it shows this number instead of the real one. So its just a fault with the network, nothing dodgy going on.
